Firmware Version: 1.0.5

Hey guys,

I have an issue with my new AX53 router.

So, prior to upgrading I did not have Wifi 6 on router and I was looking forward to getting it, to give you some perspective, I pay for 400 mbps up & down.
These were my speeds prior to purchasing router on my old Netgear R6220 - 13111793450.png (750×400) (speedtest.net)
Now, after upgrading these were my speedtest results:

1) 13111999710.png (750×400) (speedtest.net)
2) 13112073402.png (750×400) (speedtest.net)
3) 13112188613.png (750×400) (speedtest.net)
Upload speed seems good, but download speed is incredibly jumpy and very inconsistent, can anyone explain me why or how could I fix that?
It starts the speed test time from time at around 350 mbps DL (which is fairly good) and then drops by 10's to 250 or so, basically speeds I had before for download, I am baffled as to what could be causing it.
I am using new drivers on my laptop and got my BIOS updated so there's no issues too (network card -  Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201)

  @Allison00

Did you update the drivers for the AX201? I think the latest is 22.130.0. The easiest way to find out is use the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant.

Yep, as mentioned in initial post, all of the drivers are up to date alongside router itself.

Hi @Allison00,

When you are running these tests is there a noticable slowdown on your connections to the internet? Or is it simply the instability of the download speed that has you concerned?

Are these speedtests run on a connection that is wired to the router or a wireless connection? This is one way in which we can make these tests more consistent.

I also notice that you are using speedtest.net  Testing speeds through this are done by sending the information to a server owned by that company, sending that data back to the user, and then analyzing it. As a result, there are many factors at play here beyond what we can control, as things could affect the overall speed at any point along the line between your house and server you are connecting to.

I would recommend both changing servers on the speedtest and also changing what speed test you are using to see if you have the same results.

When running the tests, it usually starts at higher speeds (350-380 mbps DL) and then drops rapidly by 10's to 250 or so usually. Via wired connection to the PC, the speeds are stable at 380-390 mbps on speedtest, no issues. The images I've added on initial post were all from wireless connection on my laptop. Alternatively I've tried downloading a game via Steam platform, which reached maximum speed of 25mbps (so by multiplying by 8 that's about 200mbps). This is overall weird because the download speed specifically is lower or on par with the old router I've had that did not even have wifi 6 technology with it. Although, the upload speed is 3-4x higher.

Hello @Allison00

I want to ask if you have a chance to test the wireless connection with other Wi-Fi 6 clients, such as phones? What is the speed?

Are you using the same SSID for both 2.4G and 5G networks? Can you confirm if the wireless connection on this computer switched to 2.4G when the speed drops? I would suggest trying to create different SSIDs for the 2.4G and 5G networks, and ensure you are connected to the 5G network all the time. Before doing that, please disable the Smart Connect first.

You can also modify the 5G wireless settings, such as channel and channel width, pick up a clear channel to avoid any interference with your neighbours.
