I am trying to evaluate a couple of newer, faster(?) TP-Link routers to improve internet performance in my home.

My problem is that when I swap out my older router with another one, I lose the internet connection.

Example: trying to compare an AC-1750 to an AX-55.  Both routers have virtually the same installation/start-up procedure.  But I find that when I disconnect the AC-1750, and then connect the AX-55, the internet connection disappears.  If I then reverse this process (go back to the AC-1750), the internet connection is restored.  After repeating all of this several times, the internet connection ‘magically’ appears with the AX-55.

This is driving me nuts. What am I missing or doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

  @CharlieMax,

Significantly Faster XD

The behavior you are seeing is most likely related to the MAC addresses of the devices. Your ISP modem is likely tracking the MAC address of your older router. This is why you can immediately get a connection when swapping back. Constantly swapping back, may simply cause enough chaos that the ISP modem refreshes the MAC it has stored.

By powering your devices up in a specific order and connecting them, you can force the modem to refresh the information. This is why you often hear to leave your modem unplugged for a few minutes, or are sometimes told to attach the ethernet cable after the router has gone through its initial boot process.

Instead of going through this each time, you can use the MAC cloning feature available on the AX55:

How Do I configure the MAC Clone Feature on my TP-Link Archer Router?
