Need to extend coverage to backyard

I need to extend my wifi coverage to my backyard. I have a brick house and 1/4 acre. What is the best equipment for that with my router or do I need a different router with outdoor extender?

There are several options you could choose from - any router in AP mode or a dedicated AP would work.
You could even a put a Range Extender like the RE200 in AP mode.
This device should be mounted outside your house and pointed towards your backyard.

I have used an RE220 Extender to extend my coverage which worked very well. It was mostly to cover WIFI cameras in my garage. I used the 5 GHz as the backhaul and the 2.4 for the cameras. The key to Extenders is to place them where it gets the best WIFI signal from both the router and the devices that need coverage.
Better is to have an AP or extender that connects via Ethernet for the backhaul if you have a real bad area. But you need a Ethernet cable between them which is not always possible.
1/4 acre is small and you may get the coverage you need by moving your existing router. Moving it even a few feet, turning it, placing it higher, moving nearby electronics, and such helps a lot as it did in my case as I have a brick fireplace about eight feet away. (Three feet west, and turned 45 degrees, father away from my computer helped me).
If your router is very old that could be part of the issue. The newer routers have better coverage. I have over an acre and just use a Router now. No AP or Extender. Sometimes I lose the signal to one of my cameras in my Garage which I suspect is more the cheap camera, power surges from my power tools, door openers, WIFI interference, and all the stuff in the garage because I would get the issue even with the extender just less often. Moving the problem camera also helped. WIFI is affected by interference as I have cameras with no issues that are more distance from the router in the garage that do not have any issues.
I prefer less network equipment which is one reason I do not use MESH, Extender, or an AP.
After trying different router placement, if your router is at end of life, I would get a newer one. An inexpensive Extender would be next step.
