I do not know how to get the old SSIDs to stop showing up when the extender is plugged in!
I have tried resetting to factory settings, what else should I try?

Welcome to our community.
Please confirm that you have correctly reset the powerline adapters:
For the models which start with TL-PAxxxx, press and hold the Pair button for 15s until all LEDs turn off and then come back on.
For models beginning with TL-WPAxxxx, press and hold the Reset button for 10s. Release the button and all LEDs turn off. When the LEDs turn back on, the reset process is complete.
You can try to change the SSID to a different one as below:
