Energy Monitoring via Matter Added to the Tapo P110M45b41f664aa245d89897e7bd49d3e0ca

Our teams are excited to announce the first firmware update officially adding Energy Monitoring via Matter is now ready for the Tapo P110M!

Check out our official press release regarding our continued support for the standard, and a few minor details regarding the development of the feature:

TP-Link Enhances Matter Compatibility with Energy Monitoring via Firmware Update

The Tapo P110M is the first device to receive the feature via a firmware update (1.3.2), and you can expect the update to arrive on your devices over the next few weeks, if it has not already.

“All Matter-certified devices with energy monitoring will eventually support Matter energy monitoring functionality via firmware updates. Currently, the update is being rolled out first to the Tapo P110M – please ensure all your devices are updated to the latest version.

While we cannot provide any early details about further compatibility updates for other models, and plans can always change, you can be confident that the teams are working on expanding the functions and compatibility of all our Matter devices - from Robot Vacuums to Smart Plugs.

—  Tapo P110M FW 1.3.2 Build 250526 —

Modifications and Bug Fixes:

1. Matter 1.3 is now ready, which allows real-time and historical power/energy usage tracking in Matter-enabled apps.
2. Enhanced device security.
3. Optimized Wi-Fi connection performance.
Note:

(1) Not all the Matter-enabled apps have fully implemented Matter 1.3 to support energy monitoring, risking inconsistent use experiences.

(2) SmartThings and Home Assistant are verified to offer functional Matter energy monitoring (though still evolving) for the time being.

Limited Platform Support
While Matter is becoming more widely known and available on a variety of platforms, specific features of Matter, such as Energy Monitoring, are not.
For Energy Monitoring, the only platforms currently confirmed to support the feature are Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant.

It's been a great addition, power monitoring in particular is quite useful for automations detecting if the connected appliance is active or in standby. For instance, you can detect if a TV connected to the plug is active to turn on some ambient lights or even modify the behaviour of motion sensors so they don't turn off lights if the TV is active.

My request, in general for every Matter smart plug vendor, is trying to make the reporting smarter. Some brands report the power every 60 seconds, others every 30 seconds, the P110M every 10 seconds, but it's always a fixed rate. Matter allows being faster when a meaningful change occurs and slower when there's nothing interesting to report so the network is not flooded. In the example of an appliance connected to the plug changing from standby to active or viceversa, I would expect the plug to report the power almost immediately without having to wait 10, 30 or 60 seconds. Likewise, if the power is more or less constant, the reporting frequency can be relaxed, no need to keep reporting now is 38.10, now it's 38.02, now it's 38.35...

Anyway, it's great that Tapo is updating products to Matter 1.3, I hope the Tapo H100 hub is next for the water leak sensor (T300) support. Also looking forward to the P115M, which in Europe has a sleek round design, guess it will release with Matter 1.3 out of the box or there'll be a day-one update.

Re:Tapo P110M - Firmware Update Adding Energy Monitoring via Matter!

Nice!  I just got some new Tapo P110M and was setting them up in the app (they came with Firmware 1.0), because energy monitoring used to be proprietary. Not as good as the Eve Energy (which has Thread and EM for a long time), but at least you can fit two P110M beside each other.

After setting them up over the last few days, I noticed some of my existing P110M had updated to Firmware 1.3, and now had EM in their Matter device (in Home Assistant)! Yay! (I can disable the duplicates in the Tapo integration).  Not sure if they update over Matter yet (the firmware was recently released), or they only updated because I happened to open the app.

I had just set a new one up, and it had firmware 1.0. I used the TP-Link app to manually update to 1.3, and it appeared fine in the app, but was unresponsive on Home Assistant.

Easy fix was to hard reboot (disconnect from power and reconnect), and then the EM features appeared.

Thank you for supporting the standard.
