Hello @88merlin ,
Welcome to our community.
Please help fix the main router's 5G to band1 (channel 36-48) .
Please confirm that you didn't set the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz to one SSID.
Try to change 5Ghz SSID to a different name.
If the suggestions above still cannot resolve it , please hard reset the extende and reconfigure it via other methods:
Configure my range extender via web GUI
Configure Range Extender via Tether APP
Best Regards.

thx for responding.
in attempting to change as suggested, below was the response when attempting to save change.
Wi-Fi Warning
Warning:Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names and passwords must match, and all radios must be enabled with WPA2 security setting, to benefit from the enhanced Wi-Fi technology on your device.
Your device is equipped with enhanced Wi-Fi technology, known as band steering, that is designed to provide improved in-home Wi-Fi performance by automatically optimizing the connection for each of you in-home Wi-Fi devices. For this technology to work properly and provide you with optimized Wi-Fi performance, the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi radios in this Wi-Fi device must match, and all radios must be enabled.
Creating unique network names and passwords for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios will disable the optimization feature and potentially result in degraded in-home Wi-Fi performance.
my 5g is set up as a guest..

Hi@88merlin ,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Do you mean that you have set the band steering (also called 'smart connect') on your router?
Enabling this feature will make the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless settings consistent. Therefore, it's normal to see only one SSID.
If you want to distinguish between different bands, we recommend disabling this feature and setting up different SSIDs for each.
Best Regards.
