High CPU usage on a TP-Link Deco mesh router can be normal, especially during brief periods when accessing the web UI or managing the network, but persistent high usage (90-100%) without a visible issue might indicate a bug, hardware limitation, or an overloaded network with too many devices. To troubleshoot, ensure your firmware is updated, try accessing the web UI to see if the load decreases after a short period, and consider a wired connection or a different setup if the problem persists. If high CPU usage leads to slow speeds or drops, contact TP-Link support.
When High CPU Usage Might Be Normal
A short burst of high CPU usage is normal when you first access the web UI or perform network-intensive tasks, as the Deco needs to quickly process information.
If the high CPU usage drops to a lower, stable level shortly after you access the web interface or open the app, it's likely not an issue and is just the system handling requests, says the TP-Link Community.
When High CPU Usage Might Be a Problem
Persistent 100% Usage:
If the CPU remains at 90-100% consistently and doesn't return to normal levels after accessing the web UI, it could point to a bug.
Network Instability:
High CPU usage that causes slow speeds, high latency, or connection drops is a serious issue.
Hardware Limitations:
Some Deco models, or certain configurations (like using a powerline model as a main unit), may have hardware limitations that struggle with high device counts or heavy network traffic.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Update Firmware:
Regularly check for and install the latest firmware updates for your Deco units via the mobile app.
- Access the Web UI:
Connect to the web interface of your main Deco unit to check the CPU load. If the load drops after a short time, you likely don't have a serious issue.
- Restart Deco Units:
A simple reboot of your Deco units can sometimes resolve temporary high CPU load issues.
- Check for Overload:
Consider the number of devices connected to your network. A very high number of smart devices or connected clients can sometimes overwhelm a Deco unit.
- Try a Wired Connection:
If using the Deco as an access point, ensure it's connected to a switch rather than directly to a router to improve traffic handling and mesh stability
