Need Advice: Managing Data Caps with Deco X55 (Put another router in front)
My ISP data cap was reached this month and this is the first time for the last couple years, and I just realized that the Deco X55 has no way to track per-device data usage by day or by month after searching this community and Internet😕.
I don’t need extremely detailed statistics, but I do want to know if a particular device is using an unusually large amount of data over a day or a week so I can limit or shut it down if needed. Right now, I have no visibility at all—I can’t tell whether this is just normal increased usage during the holiday season or if a specific device is consuming data in the background without my awareness. There’s also no way to cap bandwidth or limit speeds if I do not know these details.
After searching the community, it seems there’s no ETA for adding per-device usage tracking to the Deco X55. If I had known this earlier, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it (unfortunately, I’m already past the return window).
I need to address this issue somehow. From what I’ve found online, the only reliable solution is to place another router in front of the Deco and run the Deco in AP mode—letting the new router handle traffic monitoring while the Deco continues to provide Wi-Fi. I really hate the idea of spending more money on another device (especially since I would’ve just bought a more capable router from the start), but I also don’t want to throw away a Deco system that’s only a few months old.
Has anyone dealt with this situation before, or found a better workaround? In addition, for this method, what kind of the router you suggest to put in front of Deco?
