A7 v5 router with C7 v2 as AP, will mesh work?

A7 v5 router with C7 v2 as AP, will mesh work?
Howdy,
Main router is an A7 v5.
dug up an older C7 v2 running OpenWRT.
Wondering if I flash the tplink firmware back on the C7, will the A7 see it as able to do a mesh?
Is that a better option than running it with OpenWRT as an AP?
Any thoughts are appreciated.
