Model: Archer AX6000
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.4 Build 20210719 rel.12163

This firmware build, 1.2.4 Build 20210719 rel.12163, suddenly appeared under System Tools -> Firmware Upgrade page of my router. I couldn't find it in any official TP-Link website. Does anybody know if this is an official firmware from TP-Link and if yes, how can we check?

Just an update: Another member (Nimma) informed me that this build is already available from the TP-Link Netherlands site here. I wish someday, TP-Link will offer the capability to do a hash check on downloaded Firmware for extra security.

@RendCycle

Frimware is added at different times for different regions.  This is because at times these frimwares are regionally different.  For the US version it was just uploaded to our servers today and would have been included in Friday's weekly update.  As it is available I have published it and the file in now on our website.  Also please not that the online servers will always be updated first.

@Carl Thanks for the info, I appreciate the reply. I don't understand why a router's Firmware has to be regionally different. In the case of TP-Link, it's different per country I think. I didn't encounter this problem with other router brands IIRC.

I also noticed some countries don't even have any TP-Link AX6000 Firmware updates available for this year and the latest one they have is still in early 2020. What will the customer do if they experience issues for their device? Are they stuck using an old non secure Firmware?

@RendCycle

Every region is regulated differently.  For instance in the US the FCC regulates the wireless frequency that can be used.  While the bands and features are pretty much the same the channels available may be different.  Also there are the power and outlet differences that have to be taken into account as well.  Another thing is that every region is its own subsidiary, with its own support, marketing and sales teams.  We do this to ensure each region has the product lines that benefit them the most.  But because of this we don't have much information on other regions or when firmware is released for them.

The way we do firmware is that we only release a new version when there is a bug/flaw/vulnerability to patch or new feature to add. Older firmware does not mean its any less secure but that for that region there are not any bug or flaws to patch or new features to add.

@Carl Thanks for the clear explanation on the region differences. I understand some of it except the part about delegating the responsibility for Firmware patches to each region. If a particular branch in one region or country is NOT that active in fixing any bugs/flaw/vulnerabilities for their Firmware and therefore has a lousy software tech support service, won't the TP-Link brand as a whole be affected negatively?

For example, for the Philippines (ph), the latest Firmware they have available is Archer AX6000(EU)_V1_200212 which was published on 2020-03-12. In the USA (us) sitethe latest version available is Archer AX6000(US)_V1_210719 with publish date of 2021-08-24. The ph Firmware already missed a lot of bug/flaw fixes and the addition of new features as specified in the ff. updates from more active regions:

  • Archer AX6000(US)_V1_210719
    Improved the stability of the wireless network.

  • Archer AX6000(US)_V1_210511
    New Features/Enhancement:
    1. Optimized HomeCare feature;
    2. Improved the stability of the wireless network;
    3. Improved the stability of the WPA3 encryption;
    4. Improved the stability of onemesh feature;
    5. Improved the stability of USB sharing feature.
    Bug Fixed:
    1. Fixed the FragAttacks vulnerabilities;
    2. Fixed the bug that the online-test function of the router works abnormally in some cases;
    3. Fixed the bug that the "Description" in the address reservation could not be modified successfully;
    4. Fixed the bug that can't modify the client icon in the Tether APP;
    5. Fixed the bug that Alexa can't control the guest network.

Since the TP-Link AX6000 routers being used in the Philippines are NOT exempt from Frag attacks and other vulnerabilities/threats from the Internet, customers there are at a disadvantage. They probably paid the same or even higher price for the router if they were imported. But they DO NOT enjoy the same protection and benefit. Their warranty is also lost if they choose to use a Firmware from another region. With this, why would they buy TP-Link routers again in their country? Is the TP-Link main/global office not concerned about this?

@RendCycle

I honestly do not have an answer for that.  I know or rather have seen specific regions not affected by a particular bug and that could be a reason why one region has a patch and another does not, but since I not in software development and don't have access to regional difference I can't give you a clear answer.  If you contact support@tp-link.com, which is global support, they may be able to give you a more through response.

It is available in the US already but I can say it actually made my 5Ghz connection very unstable. The previous release was better on my router. I finally got it working after 2 days but I had to reset everything and I had to change my 5GHz settings. 160Mhz doesn't seem to work properly nor does DFS (at least not for very long). I also didn't change the password but started getting random devices that said they had authentication issues on the 5Ghz band. I had to reset and start from scratch and also had to flash the firmware 3 times to get semi normal functionality back.

@pdamasco

I hope you've got all working and running properly now, do let us know if there is still an issue with the 5G connection, thanks.
