Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

We recently transitioned from Spectrum to Google Fiber. Spends were never great wtih Spectrum - but they aren't any better with Google. My IT support for work said my speeds are way too low.

From what I see - the Deco S4R sould handle faster speedns than what I'm getting (last speed test was 89 mbps down / 74 mbps up. I know speeds will be slower via wifi than if i was hard wired in, but I guess I would expect the speeds to be higher than they are.

What can I do to improve the speeds via the Deco? Do I need to scrap this system all together and buy something new?

What type of connection is being made with the wireless device that's experiencing slow internet speeds? (ex: 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, etc.). What's Tx rate of the connection? Signal strength? Is it a 2.4Ghz or 5GHz connection? What type of ethernet cable is your Deco wired with? Have you tried changing any settings in the Deco app?

  @potatoes You ask very good quesetions - and I must admit I'm not tech saavy enough to really know how to answer.

When looking at the app - it says my internet connection is IPv4 with Dynamic IP as the connection type.  I didn't find any information re; Tx rate.

The speed is set to auto switch between 2.4ghz and 5ghz.

There is a Cat5 cable going between the modem and the main deco.

I haven't tried changing any settings since I don't know enough to know what to change. Afraid of screwing things up.

  @CAC777

Hi,  You can refer to this link to check the wireless link speed when the mobile devices are connected to Deco.

How to check the associated/link speed on a wireless client

Normally, the expected speed of 5Ghz could be 50-70% of the link speed.

I did not see you mentioned anywhere about the subscribed bandwidth from Google Fiber. May I know how much internet bandwidth you are expected to get from Google Fiber?

For Deco S4, it has a gigabit Ethernet port and the wired speed from the main Deco is up to 1G.

For the wireless speed, its wireless specifications are

AC1200
5 GHz: 867 Mbps (802.11ac)
2.4 GHz: 300 Mbps (802.11n)

Within the proper distance, the expected 5Ghz wireless speed from the main Deco is 300-500m/s

Thank you very much and best regards.

  @David-TP You mentioned the following: "2.4 GHz: 300 Mbps (802.11n)". Is 802.11n at 300Mbits on 5 GHz as well?

  @potatoes

Hi, sorry for the delay.

There hasn't been any record yet but I think it should be up to 400m/s for 5Ghz on 802.11n.

Deco M4 is 2*MU-MIMO+256QAM on 5GHz.(2.4GHz is 2*MU-MIMO+64QAM).

Sometimes I was also quite confused about the maximum link speed and please feel free to let me know if there is any mistake.

Thank you very much and best regards.

  @David-TP The issue I'm experiencing with my XE75 Pro is that I have an older MacBook Pro with 802.11n WiFi, and it connects on the 5GHz band and 40MHz channel at 300Mbits. It can download maximum at 210Mbits. On my old router from another brand, I was able to make a 400Mbit connection, and download at 270Mbits. My internet is 300/300. I'm guessing it might be some kind of a hardware issue/limitation, because I tried different settings suggested by support documentation, and nothing helped. All of my other newer devices work as they should.
