I do love these bulbs and the ease with which I set them up--BUT, why on earth would I create groups of devices if I cannot create a schedule for the entire group?

Schedules are device specific and while all devices that can be included in a group support this feature, group was not desinged to make use of advanced features.  Its sole purpose was to be able to turn on or off multple products at once. 

 

There is a work around though.  Take a look at this story about how to use Scenes and Smart Actions to set a schedule for multiple devices.
