1.  Going through the setup for client mode or WISP, I can't get the machine to connect to my network.  Which version of firmware should the machine have to do this?

 

2.  The machine that I'm trying to connect wirelessly to my network only has an ethernet connection and is a file server.  That means it has to have a known address and the other computers on the network have to be able to connect to it.  That means (I think) that I must be able to assign a LAN address to the file server.  Can I do that with the TL-WR802N?

In your case you have to use client mode - here's a guide on how to do that.

Thea are two options:

1. Leave the TL-WR802N network IP address as Smart IP (DHCP) and access teh devices via http://tplinkwifi.net

2. Set TL-WR802N network IP address as Static IP  - in this case you have to set an IP address in your main router LAN subnet. (for example 192.168.0.254 and access it at http://192.168.0.254)
