I have two story home and some areas have weak signal. What is the best way to extend the range?

Router placement does make a difference. Just a few feet, higher is better most times, what is near by such as other electronics affect the signals. So try different things.
The 2.4 GHz will get the best range but is not as fast and tends to have more interference from other things. The higher GHz has more speed but less distance. So use different SSIDs to control which devices are on which GHz.
Next is to use APs or extenders. If connecting via WOFI, the key is to place the Extenders in an area that gets a good signal from the router and can provide a good signal to the devices.
Connecting the APs or extenders via Ethernet will make for better signals as they can be placed in the trouble area.
