Hi all, I have an interesting situation. I need to be able to connect a VOIP ATA to a mobile hotspot.

The hotspot I am using is a cellphone, set on Tethered mode.

The ATA is a GrandStream HT801

I had the great idea of using the TP-Link RE315 (AC1200) extender. I configure the RE315 to connect to the hotspot as the host network, then connect the HT801 to the RE315's Ethernet port. The HT801 is Ethernet only.

To test, I first connected an Ethernet computer via cable to the RE315 and then went to 192.168.0.254 and configured the RE315 to connect to the cellphone's hotspot. This worked. I tested the Internet connection on the desktop and was able to navigate correctly, bringing up various random Websites.

However, when I disconnect the desktop and in its place I connect the HT801, the device is unable to connect correctly. The HT801 has three lights:

Power - this lights up OK

Internet - this also lights up OK, indicating that it is connected to the Internet

Phone - this LED stays dark, indicating that the HT801 could not connect to the service.

That last LED perplexes me. I tried with two different cellphones and got the same result. Has anyone successfully connected a VOIP device to the Internet using the RE315 as a bridge? Or any other similar TP-Link product?

Any ideas are welcomed. Currently, I am working on getting a switch so that I can connect the HT801 and desktop computer to the RE315, but the power supply won't arrive till later of the March 23rd week. I would like to see how the HT801 gets configured when it connects to the RE315. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Hello @sgarciav ,

Welcome to our community.

As you tested, the PC can access the network through the RE315 without issue, but the HT801 cannot.

The initial guess is that it might be unable to obtain an IP address correctly, or that some advanced settings need adjustment.

It is recommended that you contact HT801 Technical Support to check if the HT801 needs any settings changes and what configuration details are required. For example, could you configure a static IP address for the HT801 to expedite the configuration process?

For the Switch, this is possible if you intend to use it to extend wired connections. However, it may not be directly related to successfully configuring the HT801.

Best Regards.
