Model: Deco X60
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.3.0 Build 20240830 Rel.50008

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a specific DNS issue regarding IPv6 implementation on my Deco X60 units.

My Setup: ISP ONT (ZTE F601v7) -> Deco X60 (Main Router via PPPoE) -> Deco X60 (Satellite via Wired Backhaul). The ISP router is removed entirely; the Deco establishes the PPPoE connection.

The Problem: When I enable IPv6 on the Deco app (set to PPPoE/Native), my clients receive IPv6 addresses correctly. However, when I perform a DNS leak test online, I see that my DNS queries are being routed through Google Public DNS servers (IPv6), often geolocated in other regions, rather than my local ISP’s DNS servers.

  1. My IPv4 DNS is manually set to my ISP's DNS, which works fine.

  2. However, the system seems to prefer IPv6 for DNS queries.

  3. Since Deco apparently doesn't receive or respect the ISP's IPv6 DNS automatically (or defaults to a fallback), it forces the connection to use Google DNS.

Comparison: When I use the ISP-provided router (Huawei or Zyxel) with the same line and IPv6 enabled, this does nothappen. The ISP router strictly uses the ISP's own DNS servers for both IPv4 and IPv6.

My Questions:

  1. DNS Fallback: Why does the Deco X60 force/fallback to Google DNS for IPv6? Is there a way to force Deco to obtain the IPv6 DNS automatically from the PPPoE session correctly, or prevent it from using Google as a fallback without disabling IPv6 entirely?

  2. Hardware Offloading: Does the Deco X60 V3.20 maintain Hardware NAT acceleration when configured with PPPoE + VLAN Tag (ID 35) + QoS enabled? Or does enabling QoS disable the hardware offloading and force CPU-based routing?

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that you are experiencing DNS leaks on your Deco Mesh system when using IPv6 (PPPoE/Native). While your clients receive the correct IPv6 addresses, DNS queries are being sent to Google DNS instead of your ISP's DNS, unlike your previous ISP routers which used the ISP's DNS for IPv6. You'd like to know why Deco defaults to Google DNS for IPv6 and whether it can automatically obtain the correct IPv6 DNS servers from your ISP without disabling IPv6. Additionally, you are asking if hardware NAT is maintained on Deco X60 V3.20 when using PPPoE + VLAN + QoS, or if QoS disables hardware offloading.

Regarding IPv6 DNS on Deco:
Deco Mesh systems do support IPv6 Internet connections, but by default, the IPv6 DNS server may not always be automatically obtained from your ISP, especially if the ISP does not provide the DNS information in a way Deco recognizes. In such cases, Deco may default to public DNS servers like Google DNS for IPv6. To resolve this and ensure your clients use your preferred DNS (including your ISP's IPv6 DNS), you can manually set the IPv6 DNS servers in the Deco app:

1. Make sure your phone is connected to the Deco Wi-Fi network.
2. Open the Deco app and go to MORE > Internet Connection > IPv6 > DNS Address.
3. Enter your preferred IPv6 DNS servers (for example, those provided by your ISP) and save the settings.

This will ensure that IPv6 client devices receive the correct DNS server addresses and prevent DNS leaks to public DNS servers like Google.

For more detailed instructions, please refer to this FAQ: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1855/

Regarding hardware NAT and QoS on Deco X60 V3.20:
While your question about hardware NAT with PPPoE + VLAN + QoS is not directly covered in the provided QAs, generally, enabling QoS on most routers (including Deco) may disable hardware NAT (hardware offloading), as QoS requires software processing of traffic to prioritize packets. This can result in slightly reduced throughput compared to when hardware NAT is enabled. However, the actual impact depends on the specific firmware and hardware version. For the most accurate information, please check the release notes for your Deco X60 firmware or contact TP-Link support directly.

Summary of steps:
• To prevent IPv6 DNS leaks, manually set your preferred IPv6 DNS servers in the Deco app as described above.
• For hardware NAT and QoS, enabling QoS may disable hardware offloading, but this depends on the model and firmware.

If you need further assistance, please let us know your ISP's IPv6 DNS server addresses or any additional details.

  @JamiryoFC

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback.

For the DNS leak issue, I'll follow up on your case via email and ask the senior engineer for further advice.

For the second question, I think the Deco will be forced to use CPU acceleration.

Best regards.

@David-TP Thank you both. I guess i'll use isp router and keep deco in dynamic ip or ap mode. Im just not sure which mode better yet.

@JamiryoFC AP Mode is the best and you don't need to use any extra DNS because in AP Mode Deco can use everything from ISP router.

Please & Thank You !! ❤️
