Model: Archer A20
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 0.5.0 0.9.1 v006c.0 Build 201103 Beta.36058n

Hi,

I have a Tp-Link VR2800 / AC2800 that has a Google Nest Thermostat connected to it via WiFi, however on the Nest App it frequently shows as 'Offline'. Have established this is not a app/phone issue as it happens on iPhone and when pinging the Nest frequently get replies then time outs constantly. It will automatically then re-connect or somethings have to press on the nest for it to "wake up"

I've spoken to Google Nest help support so far and they don't have a clue so far so have escalated it. Have established it's something to do with our router/network as If I connect the Nest to a iPhone's hotspot, the connection is stable.

I've added  the Nest Theromstat to the Priority list (nothing else is on it) and made no difference.

I've compared the 2 settings on the nest when connected to iPhone and Router and can't see main differences:

  Router iPhone
Security wpa/wpa2
wps
wpa/wpa2
Address 192.168.1.102 172.20.10.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.240
Router 192.168.1.1 172.20.10.1
Name servers 192.168.1.1 172.20.10.1

I've updated the router to the latest settings firmware but this has made no difference. So far no success with this!

@JBondo

So you have SmartConnect / Band Steering enabled on the router?  Some device dont like this and will drop out, try disabling this if you do

Also I would consider changing your encryption on the router to WPA2 alone (not WPA/WPA2) as WPA is now becoming legacy.    I know IOS device for example dont like WPA/WPA2 mode used.

Also have you tried different channels for the WiFi incase its losing signal?

When you tested it connected to the IPhone, was the IPhone closer to the nest or placed where the router sits?

@Philbert

Thanks for getting back to me.

I don't have SmartConnect ot Band Steering features on my router (Archer VR2800 / AC2800)

For encryption, there is no option for WPA2 alone, just WPA/WPA2 Personnel, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise, WEP

I've not tried different WiFi channels, so I will try that.

The iPhone I have tried in a few places. I put the iPhone directly underneath the nest so it had full signal, I then put it in the top floor bathroom (3 floors), most furthest away from the Nest which only reported 3 bars of signal (out of 5), the nest was still happy connecting to the iPhone. I thought signal could be the issue as the router only shows as 3 bars but the iphone on the top floor debunked that idea!

Edit:

Nest is currently connecting to 5.0Ghz network, have changed it to Channel 36 with Width set to auto. No success still flickers offline

Changing WiFi to 802.11n only for example has not worked. I've tried doing this with the 5.0Ghz network too but nest does not connect.

@JBondo

Hi, you may try to change the DNS server on the VR2800 to something else, such as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, then reboot to confirm.

Hi,

Just to follow up with this... It turns out the issue was actually our ISP. Kept dropping out etc, we've since changed and no problems!
