I hope not.
The latest firmware for my M9 v1.0 units is 1.5.1 from January 2021...

it's EOL on the us site

M9 was announced nearly 5 years ago, so EOL is not unreasonable from a sales point of view. I'd still expect the promised 1.6.x firmware, and security fixes for another year or so.

So, where are the 2 weeks timespan for the 1.6.0 release, promised 5 weeks ago?
This becomes ridiculous! Let me say, TP-Link is ridiculous.
I will start a claim via Testaankoop (Consumer protection community), since TP-Link promised a lot on their boxes, but never fulfilled any of them. False advertising.
I own 7 (S.E.V.E.N) of these M9 Plus devices, but having firmware of 2021/10/18, while TP-Link is releasing 1 new device per week.
I would be ashamed to work for TP-Link. So much respect to you.

There really is no winning, is there?
Complaints when 1.6.1 is delayed, but if they release it early and full of issues, there'll surely be complaints about that as well.
TP-Link, just keep working on your devices and firmware, I'll patiently wait for the next release and upgrade when it's ready.
I upgraded to 1.6.0 beta as well, in the full understanding that it might contain bugs and knowing I couldn't downgrade at the time.
However, downgrading to the latest stable is an option, so if I had issues I would surely do that - which I will recommend to everyone in this thread with issues.
As for threatening them with a claim, please share the outcome, I'll grab some popcorn in the meantime.
