Model: Deco BE65
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.2

I Have 6 BE65 units. The main one is wired to the internet in my garden room, then connected via CAT6 to another unit in the house, which then hard wire connects to a further unit. These work fine as long as they're hard wired. However, no matter what I do, all units working wirelessly want to connect to the main unit only, they completely ignore the units much closer to them that have Ethernet backhaul. So if I add one that connects to the main unit (with a VERY weak signal), all other wireless decos want to connect to that unit, resulting in them disconnecting randomly and giving terrible speeds.
I've gone as far as resetting the whole system, adding them one by one then when it gets to the 4th unit which needs to connect via wireless, I wrap the main unit up the garden in foil so it can't 'see it' and lock on to that unit. This results in the app refusing to add the new deco. It will find it eventually but refuses to synchronise settings.
I thought there would be some intelligence in this system to join a node with the strongest signal, but they just won't do it. I've tried swapping units to no effect. Setting the 'connection preference' from auto to a specific node has absolutely no effect either, they just ignore that and carry on trying to connect to the main unit.

what's going on here? I bought 6 of these to cover my needs and looks like I'll have to return them all

Hi, welcome to our community.

Can you draw the exact network topology including the distances among Decos and your house structure for better understanding?

If you are using a switch in the topology, please also note its model number.

Thank you and best regards.

Hi Marvin

Please see below setup (pic1). This is how I want the system to work and I only got it to work this way once after upgrading the wired units to the Beta 1.1.4 firmware. When they were on 1.1.2 all wireless satellites connected to the office, regardless of signal strength or connection preference, so the wifi was constantly dropping out. For info, the Office main Deco is in a garden room then connected via CAT6 to the Games room, which is then directly connected to the living room via CAT6. There are no switches in between.

Last night, the Decos automatically upgraded themselves to 1.1.5 and completely broke this setup, in that the wireless units all just tried to connect to the Office Deco again. I've had to downgrade back to 1.1.4 and turn off automatic updates to restore a decent connection. It still does seem even on this firmware that the 'Connection Preference' has absolutely zero effect. The Deco 'Gems Office' should connect to the Games room as that is the one that always reports the strongest signal, however if I leave it on Auto it will connect to the Living room with a weaker signal and if I do set the preference as Games room, it tries to connect back to the Office and constantly disconnects as the signal is very weak.

So there's something very wrong in the firmware for how these units are selecting the best signal path. In fact just as I've been typing this, 'Gems Office' has gone offline (Pic2) and looks like it's trying to connect to Office again (which is right down the garden and in a foil lined insulation building), despite the light on the actual unit being solid green. The Games room unit is in the next room!
