WireGuard VPN Only Gives Local Network Access – Unusable Internet
WireGuard VPN Only Gives Local Network Access – Unusable Internet

Hi everyone,
I’ve been struggling to get my WireGuard VPN server working properly. I’ve tested both the latest official firmware and pre-release versions(1.4.1 Build 20250213), but the issue persists.
Here’s what’s happening:
-
Connection works – I can connect to the VPN successfully.
-
LAN access works – I can reach local devices without problems.
-
Internet access fails – Websites either don’t load at all or only partially load before stalling.
-
Ping & DNS seem fine
For comparison, OpenVPN (UDP) works flawlessly under the same conditions. I’ve also tried lowering the MTU, changing ports, but no luck.
Has anyone else faced this issue? Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks in advance for any help!
I have found this post from another user who has the exact same problem that I'm having . https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/730864?replyId=1473548

Thank you for reporting your issue to our community.
For your issue, please help collect the following information:
- Who is your VPN provider? What country/region is the client located in? Please make sure you have completed the configuration correctly (you can check whether the username and password are entered correctly)
- Please confirm whether the VPN server is working properly. You can set up VPN clients with the same configuration information on different devices to access the VPN server for testing.
- If other clients can access the VPN server normally, please help collect the system logs and backups of the router:
How to view and save System Log of TP-Link wireless router
How to create and restore from a backup file on your TP-Link Router
You can send the information above to email support.forum@tp-link.com, attaching [Forum ID 790348] and details, and we will have a dedicated person to assist in analysis and follow-up.

The suggestions given by the support team was generic and has not fixed the issue. Not sure why this message was tagged as the recommended solution to this problem.
The most wierd thing is that openvpn works perfectly fine with expected speeds. When I connect using wireguard, maybe I can load one webpage or two before it chokes out and completely stops working.
There are other people having the exact same problem in reddit and tplink forums so I don't think this is a one-off issue that just affects me.

¿Me estoy perdiendo algo obvio?
Saludos@Jickson_Davis

Hi@Jickson_Davis ,
It has been more than three months since our last reply. I marked it as Recommended Solution to provide reference for other users.
Is your issue still the same? I noticed your case was previously transferred to engineering with the ID TKID250414103.
Have you been keeping the engineering team updated on the situation to ensure progress?

Hello@jaguar402 ,
Welcome to our community.
According to the translation of Google Translate, your question is that WireGuard VPN doesn't work on the router. If there is any discrepancy, please describe it in English.
May I know what troubleshooting you have done? You can see that Archer AX53 V1 already supports Wireguard VPN: Pre-release Firmware for Archer AX53/AX58 Supports EasyMesh in AP Mode, Ethernet Backhaul, ECO Mode

Hi,
Yes, I have followed through all the steps they suggested. I created a client configuration and shared with them for testing( I have deleted it since). I think I also shared my entire router configuration as a generated backup file. They couldn't find what the issue was.
Finally they asked to remote into my system and check the settings. I couldn't do that since I don't have physical access to the router( I connect to it through a vpn hosted on a rpi). And I guess I lost faith in their ability to help me at that point. What more information that is not in the backup file and client.conf file could they find by remoting into my system.
The fact that openvpn works perfectly is what is wierd for me. Also wireguard hosted on a Raspberry Pi directly connected to the router also works.
I think that shows that it is not an issue with routing or ISPs. I am open to be corrected.

Hello@Jickson_Davis ,
Thanks for getting back to me.
We recommend manually adding a DNS line to your configuration file, as shown below:
For more details, it is recommended that you can email our engineer.
Remotely accessing your device to locate the issue is crucial for engineers to effectively troubleshoot while ensuring security. If you can cooperate with our engineers' suggestions, I believe the issue may be resolved more quickly.
