Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.2.4 Build 20241227 Rel. 63367

I have 3 Deco X20s that generate a Mesh network in my 3 storied house, one in each floor.

The topology is as below:

ISP Internet --> 1F-Deco (Main Deco) (connected via Cat6)

1F-Deco --> 0F-Deco (Secondary Deco) (connected via WiFi aka WiFi Backhaul)

1F-Deco --> 2F-Deco (Secondary Deco) (connected via WiFi aka WiFi Backhaul)

The issues I face are:

  1. Once in a day or so, the end devices like my Laptop and our Android phones lose connection to the Decos. At this time when I open the Network menu on my Pixel 7, it shows that it is "Obtaining IP address" and it gets stuck there for sometime, then just disconnects from the Network. Sometimes I see a "IP configuration Failure" message in the Network menu of my phone.
Rebooting all the Decos is the only solution I have found that works which is obviously impractical If I have to do it on a daily basis.
I have tried a schedule reboot of the network around 3AM everyday, but it hasn't helped.
  2. Sometimes the Indicator light on the Secondary Decos turn Red and I cannot connect to these Decos. Rebooting the Deco is the only solution I have found that works.

Any help in solving this is appreciated.

Note:

  1. I use the Deco app it says that the firmware I have is the latest - 1.2.4 Build 20241227 Rel. 63367
  2. Generally there are about 7 devices connected to the network; and I have faced this issue when even a single device is connected. So I do not believe that the issue is because of the network being overloaded with the number of connected devices.
  3. I read somewhere (most likely in this forum) that this could be because of the poor/buggy DHCP Server implementation in the Deco. Not sure if that can be fixed/updated somehow. What are the chances that this issue will remain if I use all the three Decos as Secondary Decos and use another TP-Link router as my main router since the router is still TP-Link?

The issue seems to be with the range of the main Deco/location of the satellite Decos.

Although Satellite Decos shows a Green signal and has good network strength, it occasionally loses connection with the Main Deco and then we see the "IP configuration failure" error on the devices connected to Satellite Decos.

1. If I move the Satellite Decos a little closer to the Main Deco, then the issue does not occur at all.

2. If I connect the Main Deco and Satellite Deco via Ethernet cable, then the issue does not occur at all.

I do not know why inconsistent connectivity b/w Main Deco and Satellite Deco is causing the "IP configuration failure" error. It is something that needs to be addressed cleanly by the Engineering team.

For sometime I had moved the Satellite Deco closer to the Main Deco and had them connect to each other wirelessly.

Now, I have connected both of them via an Ethernet cable and a Switch. My topology is as below:

Main Internet Cable --> Main Deco X20 --> TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit Switch --> Satellite Deco X20

IP Cameras --> PoE Switch --> Satellite Deco X20 --> TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit Switch --> NVR

FWIW, the Decos I have are India region ones - Deco X20 (IN).

Hi, may I know how long you have had the Deco X20? Did the issue start recently?

Have you tried to set a different Deco as the main Deco?

How to replace the main Deco with another Deco

Did it improve the wireless stability if we disable the 2.4GHz band and only leave 5GHz enabled?

Apart from the Deco, do you have another ISP-provided router?

If yes, we could try to set Deco X20 into "Access Point" mode, which also helps to identify the issue

"What are the chances that this issue will remain if I use all three Decos as Secondary Decos and use another TP-Link router as my main router, since the router is still TP-Link?"

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

I have had the Deco for about 3 months and I have been facing this problem from Day-1. I just hoped that the problem would go away. I have reached out here now since this is getting in the way of my work now.

No, I have not.

I am yet to try this. I will try this and update here.

Yes, I do have a ISP provided TP-Link Archer C20 Router. I will try the Access Point Mode and update here.

I replaced the Main Deco with one of the Satellite Decos and the problem still occurred.

One more thing is that the problem almost always occurs with the Satellite Deco.

At the time when the phone cannot connect to the Satellite Deco, if I switch off the Satellite Deco, then the phone connects to the Main Deco without any issues.
