Add SFTP / FTPS / WebDAV support for USB sharing (BE800v1, BE550v1, AX80v1(EU), AX55v1)
Hello TP-Link Team,
I’d like to suggest adding SFTP, FTPS, or WebDAV support for USB file sharing in future firmware updates.
I currently operate several TP-Link routers across different locations (home, office, and remote sites):
– Archer BE800 v1 (EU)
– Archer BE550 v1 (EU)
– Archer AX80 v1 (EU)
– Archer AX55 v1 (EU)
The USB file sharing feature works very well over FTP and SMB, but secure transfer protocols are becoming increasingly important — especially for remote uploads and backups.
Recently, many ISPs and network security systems have started to throttle (speed-limit) or completely block FTP traffic, since it’s unencrypted and flagged as insecure by DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) systems.
In my setup, transfers within the same local network always reach full speed, but cross-network FTP connections between different sites are heavily throttled or unstable, indicating that traffic shaping is being applied by ISPs.
Using a VPN tunnel helps bypass this filtering, but the throughput is still limited by encryption overhead and tunneling latency.
Adding encrypted transfer options would effectively solve these issues:
-
FTPS (FTP over TLS) – easiest to implement, extending the current FTP module.
-
WebDAV over HTTPS – secure browser-based access or mountable network drive.
-
SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) – best long-term solution for reliable and fully encrypted file transfers.
The goal is not to remove FTP, but to modernize the USB sharing system with secure, ISP-friendly protocols, ensuring stable performance even between remote networks.
It would make TP-Link routers much more practical for multi-location file sync, remote access, and small business environments.
If any beta or experimental firmware with these features is available, I’d be happy to help test and provide detailed feedback.
Best regards,
