At present, Tapo plug can be easily tricked by a 3rd party if you are measuring power usage.

For example, if I want to use a lot of energy without the App owner knowing while sleeping, I can just wait for s/he to go to sleep, then:

a) remove the plug from the wall outlet

b) put a multiadaptor socket in the wall outlet

c) put the Tapo plug on one of the multiadaptor sockets

d) put my high-drain appliance on another of the multiadaptor sockets.

e) when morning comes, I just revert

When the App owner looks at the dashboard, s/he sees no significant usage of power while s/he was asleep.

I think we need a solution to this - an alert to let the App owner know that the plug has been removed from the wall outlet at some point.

I did think that a Smart Action might solve - but I discovered that it would only alert me if the Power Button on the plug itself was pressed On or Off. So no good.

My suggestion - I undertand why if the plug is physically removed from the outlet, it can not send an alert (due to not having any power).

But surely when the plug is put back in the outlet, power does reach the plug and so the plug should be able to sense 'Mains Power present, on-device Power Button not in On-state' ??

At that point, as power is reaching the plug, it should presumably be able to record the state and thus be usable in Smart Actions (to send an alert).

The App owner would then be able to detect that the plug had been removed from the outlet at some stage (or maybe there had been a power outage).

Without this facility, the plugs are useless to monitor power consumption by a third party. : o(

(BTW This Suggestion Forum is excellent - wish other manufacturers had it)

  @Janyo

Can you share the background of this request? Why would someone do that? Or why don't you want them to do that? For example, are you setting rules for the kids?

In my observation, if someone is determined to deliberately circumvent the established rules, they will always find a way to do so.

>>Can you share the background of this request?<<

Room rental

>>Why would someone do that?<<

To use more than their fair share of power without paying extra

>>Or why don't you want them to do that?<<

If the electric bill goes up excessively and we don't know the perp, rental costs have to go up for all - which is unfair on the people who are just using regular amounts of electricity

>>In my observation, if someone is determined to deliberately circumvent the established rules, they will always find a way to do so<<

In the suggested alteration from my OP (if technically possible to implement), this would not be circumventable. Any removal of the Tapo plug from an outlet and consequent power to plug off, then power to plug on event would be noted on the App. At present that does not happen.

If there are e.g. four outlets in a rental, and each has a Tapo plug up and running when renter starts, with maybe a multi outlet strip hanging off each, then honest renters can just attach/remove their devices from the outlet strip. The Tapo plug remains in its socket.

The only way for a dishonest renter to try to hide the excessive power usage would be to remove the Tapo plug from the outlet, put in a multi-way adaptor, put the Tapo plug on one outlet of the adaptor (and plug the multi outlet strip with low power devices on it) then put the illegal, high power device on the other outlet of the adaptor. The Tapo plug would then register only the low power devices on the multi outlet strip, not the power used by the illegal device.

Question is, does the P110M have the intelligence to note when it loses power supply and then regains it (as opposed to what it clearly can do, namely note when the side on/off button is pressed).

Thanks.
