Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.7.8 Build 20240719 Rel. 70981

Experience with WiFi connected phones and tablets on Main WiFi SSID

  • 20-70% Packet loss loading internet web pages
  • 20-70% Packet loss pinging the WAN IP from any WiFi client connected to the Main WiFi SSID
  • No packet loss on pinging the TP-Link internal LAN gateway
  • No Packet loss on pinging other Deco IP's
  • No packet loss pinging between Wifi or cabled LAN clients

Experience with cabled LAN clients, and Guest WiFi clients

  • No Packet loss on loading internet web pages
  • No Packet loss on pinging the WAN IP of the main Deco, connected to the ISP.
  • No packet loss on pinging the TP-Link internal LAN gateway
  • No Packet loss on pinging other Deco IP's
  • No packet loss pinging between Wifi or cabled LAN clients

Conclusion:

  • Only packet loss between Main WiFi clients towards the internet.
  • Ruling out the internal LAN cabled network
  • Ruling out DNS, as it is tested with ICMP / ping.
  • Ruling out Radio quality, as clients can ping each other perfect, and the Guest WiFi clients don't have an issue
  • Ruling out the ISP, as all LAN cabled connections connect fine towards the internet.

All devices have been powered off, on, reset and have the latests software version.

I can't tell exactly when the issue started. This could be 2 days, or even a week.

The hardware version of the M5 pack I bought is a guess. It has the early USB-C power connector. There is no version mentioned on the backside/sticker of the radio.

Hi, welcome to the community.

Can you test further whether the packet loss mainly happens to the 2.4GHz band or 5GHz band?

(You could turn off the 2.4GHz on the Main Wi-Fi SSID and enable the IOT network for 2.4GHz only.)

And how long have you had the Deco M5 units?

Moreover, are you still having this issue when there is only the main Deco M5 powered on?

Thank you very much and best regards.

  @David-TP

Thank you for reaching out.

In both cases the issue persisted. I've tried 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz separately.

  • I could ping any local LAN IP from the phone, which was connected to WiFi.
  • The WAN IP had huge packet loss.

The way it is patched:

  • The ISP is connected to the Main Deco.
  • The Main Deco is connected to to a switch.
  • The switch has wired connections to both radio's.

The next thing I tried was testing with 2 radio's instead of 3.

I disconnected the switch from the Main Deco, and patched 1 satellite Deco directly in the Main Deco.

Thereby disconnecting the switch, some other systems on that switch and a 3rd Deco.

To my surprise I didn't loose any connection at all.

Having a physical cut in the network which I thought would disconnect certain parts, I had to scratch my head for a minute.

Then it hit me :)

The Deco's are able to bridge over the wired and wireless connection.

Which explains while I disconnected the switch and assumed it would disconnected, it was bridged between 2 satellite Deco's

By doing this I can't reproduce the issue anymore.
Maybe I'm a bit early to conclude the issue is gone as I need to run some tests.

I can't for sure tell you if the two satellite Deco's where both displayed as wired in the GUI, or maybe one was wireless.

Maybe there was a loop between the wired and wireless part?

While doing the ping tests I enabled wireshark on a server, which was connected to the switch.

When there was an issue with a phone (example: 192.168.218) the following ARP packets where received (and more of course):

09:19:09.006162 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.1.218 tell 192.168.1.1, length 46
09:19:09.996520 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.1.218 tell 192.168.1.1, length 46
09:19:10.996927 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.1.218 tell 192.168.1.1, length 46
09:19:12.104705 ARP, Request who-has 192.168.1.218 tell 192.168.1.1, length 46

In all cases, I was able to ping from a phone (192.168.1.218) to the Main Deco internal LAN IP (192.168.1.1)

In the case when I noticed I couldn't connect to the internet from my phone, I could not ping from the phone to the WAN IP of the Main Deco.

Hi, Thanks for the further update.

I tend to think it is very likely to have a network loop in the Mesh system but I will wait for your further tests in the next few days.

By the way, May I know the model number of the network switch?

Best regards.

Hi David.

Answer on your earlier question:

I have the Deco M5 since 2017 (USB-C powered).

The switch I'm using is a Netgear GS110TP.

I have configured 2 VLAN's.

  • VLAN 1
  • VLAN 591 (for guest WiFi)

I haven't seen the issue anymore.
