OpenVPN stuck on connecting loop after updating firmware
Thursday
Model: Archer AX73
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555)

My ArcherAX73 V2 recently (auto) updated to firmware version 1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555).

Before the firmware update, I could connect to any VPN client using OpenVPN and I had no issues. Since the latest firmware update, all OpenVPN connections I create get stuck on "connecting".

I've tried a different router and I have no problem connecting via OpenVPN, so this points to a firmware issue in the ArcherAX73 V2 1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555).

Please advise on how I can fix this problem with the new firmware.

Re:OpenVPN stuck on connecting loop after updating firmware

  @Kevin_Z

I have completed the suggested troubleshooting steps, but the VPN client connection is still not working.

Please see the requested information below:

1. Model number, hardware version, and firmware version

Model: Archer AX73

Hardware Version: V2

Firmware Version: 1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555)

2. What kind of VPN server am I connecting to?

I am connecting to third-party OpenVPN servers using ".ovpn" configuration files.

These OpenVPN configurations were working correctly on this Archer AX73 V2 before the firmware updated to "1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555)".

3. What VPN type am I choosing on the TP-Link router?

OpenVPN.

4. What VPN client software was used on a local PC or phone when connecting successfully?

The same ".ovpn" files have been tested successfully outside of the Archer AX73 V2 router environment.

I have also tested the same OpenVPN configuration on another router, and the VPN connects successfully there. This suggests that the ".ovpn" files and VPN server are working, and that the issue is specific to the Archer AX73 V2 after the latest firmware update.

5. Which step am I stuck on, and is there any error message?

The VPN client profile on the Archer AX73 V2 gets stuck on “Connecting”.

There is no clear error message shown in the router interface. The connection simply remains stuck and never establishes the VPN tunnel.

6. Troubleshooting already completed

I have already done the following:

- Confirmed that the issue started only after the firmware update to "1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555)".

- Created new VPN client profiles on the router.

- Tested multiple OpenVPN ".ovpn" files/profiles.

- Confirmed that the same OpenVPN configuration works on another router.

- Confirmed that this was working correctly on the Archer AX73 V2 before the firmware update.

- Completed the troubleshooting steps previously suggested by TP-Link support.

Based on the above, this appears to be a firmware-related issue with the Archer AX73 V2 running firmware "1.3.1 Build 20260430 rel.48448(4555)", rather than an issue with the OpenVPN server or ".ovpn" configuration file.

Please advise whether this is a known issue with this firmware version, and whether there is a beta firmware, patch, or safe firmware rollback option available.

I would prefer to avoid a full hardware reset, as the issue appears to have started directly after the firmware update and the same VPN configurations work elsewhere.
