This Article Applies to:

Archer AX20

Archer AX21

Archer AX90

Archer AX1800

Issue Description/Phenomenon:

The router models mentioned in this article have already supported the VPN Client function with the latest official firmware, so users can connect to a VPN server by configuring the router as a VPN client. However, some customers find that they are unable to connect to their VPN server when trying to configure the VPN client on the router. This article aims to provide a solution for it.

Troubleshooting Suggestions & Solution:

Step 1

Ensure you can connect to the VPN server using the VPN client on the local PC/Smartphone.

Step 2

If step 1 is confirmed good, but it still fails to connect to the VPN server, be sure the Archer router firmware is up-to-date. Below is the latest official firmware for the Archer models that support VPN Client. You can check for the updates on the Tether app or on router web GUI, or you can download it from the local official website then install it manually:

Archer AX20_V1.0_210902 and later versions;

Archer AX20_V1.20_210901 and later versions;

Archer AX20_V2.0_210902 and later versions;

Archer AX21_V1.20_210901 and later versions;

Archer AX21_V2.0_210901 and later versions;

Archer AX1800_V1.20_210901 and later versions;

Archer AX90_V1.0_210903 and later versions.

Note: Please verify the hardware version of your device first, and choose the correct file to download and install.

Step 3

If still fails, please check the size of the VPN configuration profile you are trying to upload to the router, how large that file is. You may download and install the Notepad+ application to delete the useless comment in the profile if that is too large, then try uploading it into the router again.

If the VPN connection still fails, please email support.forum@tp-link.com with the subject [Forum ID 270268] VPN Client is not working, or leave a comment below. In either case, be sure to provide the following information:

1. What is the VPN server you are connecting to?

2. What kind of VPN type you are choosing on the Archer router, OpenVPN, or PPTP VPN?

3. What kind of VPN Client software you were using on the local PC or phone?

4. Which step did you stuck in, any error message or screenshot?

If you are not familiar with the VPN Client configuration on the TP-Link router, visit How Do I Use VPN Client to Access a Remote VPN Server.

You can try the beta firmware we provided on the OP if the issue is the same.

Provide the information we need if the beta firmware still doesn't solve it.

Thanks for the reply ... I was actually asking if there was a file for the AX21 (not the AX20).  Also, if that file is in a format that can be unzipped on a Mac...

The link above appears to be specifically for the AX20 ...

Hi, have you confirmed Step 1 and 2 already, and still cannot connect to the VPN server? If that is the case, please confirm the below:

1. What kind of VPN type you are using, OpenVPN or PPTP VPN?

2. What kind of  VPN Client software you were using on the local PC or phone?

3. Which step did you stuck in, any error message or screenshot?
