‘Weak Security’ issue with tp-link AC1200 range extender?
‘Weak Security’ issue with tp-link AC1200 range extender?
Hello, I have 2 x RE305 extenders and I get a 'weak security' warning when connected through them. I have updated my router and when connected via the router the warning is no longer there, only when connected to the tp link extender. I have updated the tether app and it is still happening? Any idea how I can get rid of this and how serious is it that when I'm connected to the extender it constantly says 'weak security'. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello everyone,
Here is a summary thread for Range Extender Weak security issue where you could find the latest firmware or beta firmware that fixed the problem:

Good day.
Our range extender is on auto security mode which supports WPA2+AES as well as TKIP used for supporting some old fashioned devices only compatible with old encryption methods.
If the Apple device detects that the wireless network of our product supports a weak encryption method, this notice will show there. But in fact, IOS devices would still prefer the strong secure encryption method WPA2+AES.
And after you update the home router, have you tried to configure the RE device to re-associate the front-end through the web page Quick Setup (Tether is not recommended)?
By the way, earlier today, Apple releases iOS 14.01 which fixed bugs, and have you tried the firmware?
Thank you very much.

@Solla-topee Thanks for your reply. I've reset everything and clicked all the right settings but it still says it. I'm not the best with computers but with it saying 'weak security' is it okay to still use the extenders for WiFi? Because my router is password protected plus you need the password to get on the extenders to use the WiFi as well?
Thanks

Good day.
Thank you very much for your time and patience.
May I know your current firmware and hardware version about RE305?
Is it RE305(EU)_V3_200715?
https://static.tp-link.com/2020/202009/20200908/RE305(V3)_200715.zip
And please try to reflash this firmware and reconfigure the range extender via the web interface;
Thank you very much.

I encountered exactly the same problem - weak security shown on my iPhone. How can I set the extender to WAP2 (AES) at the web interface? Thanks!

I have the same issue on my iPhone - I've updated the Firmware and my IOS is also up-to-date, but I still get the weak security message.

@skipDivided I have the same issue with an iPad upgraded to ios 14. The host router (which uses WPA2 Personal (AES)) has no issues, only the TP-Link extender (RE650), which apparently never matched the host router and has always used TKIP. When will RE650 support AES encryption?

@Solla-topee hi there, with respect to your comment from October:
For the RE450 v3, There would be a firmware released in the future to fix this issue
Can you confirm when this firmware will be ready? I must return my v3 units this week if this is unavailable in order to adhere to policy.
The latest firmware available at the following location on your website states:
RE450(EU)_V3_190124 | ||

Published Date: 2019-02-20 | Language: Multi-language | File Size: 7.84 MB |
