This doesn't seem too difficult a feature to provide for your Tapo devices - when can we all expect to see this update?

  @Home_Cameras this would be awesome. I wouldn't have to physically reset cameras to change WiFi. It's like the feature is halfway there. As we can communicate with the camera and can skip the step of connecting to the camera as an AP.

Update on June 13, 2025.

Hi All,
First of all, thank you for your attention to our products and your valuable feedback. We have received your requests regarding the ability of Tapo smart devices to connect to different Wi-Fi networks without requiring a factory reset. We will continue to relay this feedback to the relevant departments for assessment and improve the user experience of our products.

Currently, the following alternative solution may be helpful to you.

  1. If you don't mind, you can set the new router with the same SSID, password, and wireless security type as the old router. After that, restart the Tapo device, and it usually will connect to the new router's Wi-Fi network.

   2. If the Tapo smart device is online in the Tapo app, you can remove the device from the Tapo app to perform a factory reset. Then, reconfigure the device through the app to connect to the new Wi-Fi network.

  3. If the Tapo smart device is offline in the Tapo app, try turning on the old router or configuring the new router's Wi-Fi network to match the old router's settings. Restart the smart devices to attempt to restore them online, and then repeat the steps in Method 2.

We greatly appreciate your feedback and votes here. However, to ensure that any future features we add meet your needs, we hope you can provide as much information and context as possible in your feedback. Here are some typical scenarios to consider. Please choose from these when giving feedback, and if you have any additional scenarios, we would be grateful for your contributions.

Typical Scenarios:

Case 1: The position of the smart device remains unchanged, but the Wi-Fi router has changed with a new Wi-Fi name or password.

  Case 1.1: Smart device shows online since the old router is still functioning
    a. A few Tapo devices (<3) need to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the new Wi-Fi network.
    b. Multiple Tapo devices need to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the new Wi-Fi network.

  Case 1.2: Smart device shows Offline
    a. A few Tapo devices (<3) need to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the new Wi-Fi network.
    b. Multiple Tapo devices need to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the new Wi-Fi network.

Case 2: The position of the smart device is not fixed.

  Case 2.1: For example, when traveling, you need to connect to different Wi-Fi networks in various locations; therefore, Tapo devices should be able to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the new one.

  Case 2.2: For example, in a home with multiple access points (APs) in different rooms using different SSIDs, Tapo devices should be able to switch Wi-Fi networks to connect to the strongest available Wi-Fi network.

Case 3: You request this feature because other brands of smart devices support Wi-Fi network switching. (Please specify which brands offer this functionality.)

Case 4: Others (please describe the status of your camera (online or offline) and the usage scenario)

While we don't have any specific details to share about whether this feature will be added to the product or when it might, I'll continue to log the feature request and pass it along to the relevant team for evaluation.

Best regards

  @Solla-topee

Hi guys, thank you for answering. Ill try to give more details.

As several of the users have already written, it often happens that the camera is transferred or the WIFI settings change and it is not possible to use the same SSID all the time. If the camera is on, it would be ideal to be able to connect to the camera and change the WIFI that the camera connects through. I think this should be one of the essential features of your camera app, as this option is offered by other manufacturers and not just the "professional" ones.

I hope this is not just an empty statement that you will pursue this feature.

Thanks!

Hi @Solla-topee "Regarding the requested feature, please provide more details on the specific usage scenario, for example, the camera is in an online or offline state when switching the camera's WiFi, to help us better evaluate and improve this feature." I install a new home router with a new SSID. I would like to switch all my cameras from old SSID to new SSID without needing to hard reset every camera. Since I can still talk to the cameras on the local WiFi network it would be nice to change to new SSID without having to hard reset and place each camera into AP mode first. Basically go through the last part of the setup. Thank you.

  @Solla-topee

1. When I change my SSID around or optimize then I have to hard reset every device.

2. When I take my camera to the babysitter or hotel, I have to hard reset the device to connect it to a temporary network.

This is a joke honestly. Add this feature in. It's one of the biggest pain points of your camera line. Most of us don't keep the camera in one place, we use it and take it around outside our home. This really limits us. Other camera companies you compete with have these features already in the production environment, why can't tp-link?
