Configuration Guide Connection Preference: Customize Your Preferred Signal Source
Configuration Guide Connection Preference: Customize Your Preferred Signal Source
To create a comprehensive Home Wi-Fi system offering both excellent network speed and comprehensive wireless coverage, it is common to install more than two Deco Mesh units throughout the house. A recommended approach is to position the main Deco unit in the central area of the house, with satellite Mesh units strategically placed around it. This configuration, known as a star topology, offers various advantages. The primary benefit is that there is only one hop between the main Deco and the satellite units, resulting in minimal speed loss during wireless communication. However, a challenge often arises as the internet modem is typically pre-installed in either the basement or attic. In such scenarios, opting for a daisy chain topology becomes a more practical solution rather than a star topology, such as the following multi-story floor plans:
Then How does the satellite Deco decide to connect which Mesh unit?
Deco intelligently selects the optimal signal source on its own, taking into consideration not only the signal strength but also the connection rate. This ensures that the satellite Deco units maintain consistent speed and reliable connections. After conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis, the main Deco remains selected by the satellite Deco, guaranteeing a stable and high-performance connection.
For more details, please refer to Why does the farther satellite Deco always tend to connect to the main Deco?
Is there a way to force the connection If I want to change the current signal source?
Yes! With the recent firmware release, More and more Deco products support customizing Connection Preference which allows user to customize their own network topology based on the actual placement. It gives us three options:
• Customize the preferred signal source on satellite Deco.
• Select the preferred connected Deco on mobile clients.
• Decide whether to connect 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz for mobile clients.
With a little help from the Connection Preference, the Deco Mesh System could provide every satellite Deco and each client with the expected signal source, then the optimal speed and reliable connection.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. How to configure the connection preference on the Deco APP?
How to select a preferred signal source on the Deco App
2. How do I know if my device supports connection preference?
Please click Here to get the supported models.
3. Can I still select the Connection Preference if some models in the Mesh network do not have this feature?
You are able to customize the preference signal source on the Deco APP as long as the selected satellite Deco Supports Connection Preference. However, selecting the preferred bands and Deco on mobile clients requires support on all Deco units in the Mesh.
4. What if the mobile client does not connect the preferred Deco?
A client device decides whether to roam or not depends on many factors. Please refer to This Link for further explanation.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback.
If possible, could you please help me run a simple test:
1. Try to create another Mesh system with Deco S4 only.
(You could connect the Deco S4 via an Ethernet cable to the nearby Deco X55 to set up a new mesh system)
I wonder whether it is due to the 1.4.1 firmware of Deco X55 being much higher than Deco S4_V2.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and support.

Hi, As long as the satellite Deco supports Connection Preference, you can manually set its signal source.
If you set Deco X60 as the main Deco and Deco S7 being the satellite, Deco S7 still doesn't support setting the signal source.
However, if Deco S7 is the main Deco, and Deco X60 is the satellite Deco, you could set the signal source of Deco X60.
Best regards.

Hi, Thanks for the time and patience.
The firmware downgrade from 1.6.1 to 1.5.1 beta on Deco S4, it needs to implemented via firmware recovery:

@David-TP Hi - first-time poster as I'm new to the Decos. So far I am really impressed! This replaced my aging SmartThings WiFi Mesh that Samsung and Plume recently broke I should probably thank them because I am now enjoying the many benefits of being on a more current mesh system This is fixing a lot of various issues I had, and the speeds are incredible.
Regarding this connection preference setting, it's great that this is available for the main network to tell a specific device which specific Deco unit you want to connect to. The only problem is this doesn't appear to be available for the Guest Network. It's this network where I would really like to use this setting for a specific device to connect to the Main Deco unit (not to the satellite Decos). Will this be made possible? I am experiencing issues with this device on the Guest Network, and I have a feeling it's because of the mesh technology in play for the Guest Network.
I did see the help regarding VLAN ID, which goes over my head as I'm not strong with networking. I am using switches in my Ethernet backhaul (2 managed, 1 unmanaged), and that VLAN thingy might be what is causing issues with my device. I'm hoping I can avoid this VLAN thingy altogether if TP-LINK can just add an option for connection preference for devices on the Guest Network which would allow us to assign it to the Main Deco unit (thereby ignoring the switches, etc. for the satellite decos that could be causing issues).
Thoughts? Thanks!
