Record longer before motion detection events
When using motion detection recording (not continuous recording), the Tapo app records 1~2 seconds before a motion detection event happens. I would the amount of time before the event to be longer, ideally a custom setting for each camera. At the moment I have enabled continuous recording so I can manually rewind a little, this way I get to see what happend before the motion detection event.
In the following recording timeline diagram, the top bar represents how it works at the moment: motion is detected at [1], and recording starts only 1~2 seconds before [1]. The bottom bar shows how I would like this to work: motion is detected at [1], but recording starts at [2], in other words, before the event happens. The time before the event t is specified in the camera settings by the user. To do this, the camera would need to loop-record a few minutes in case motion is detected so that it can recover the footage before the event when required:

Hopefully that makes sense, let me know if something isn't clear. Happy new year!

I would like to have this feature as well. 5-10 seconds would be more than enough for my use case. However, a custom setting or a longer one would be much better.

@RandyAndy I really do think us complaining is a lost cause to be honest.
There have been numerous people complain the same as I have about this issue and yet the manufacturer have one nothing to say about it, no comment whatsoever.
I certainly have been expressing my views to friends and collegues who have mentioned that they are cionsidering making a purchase of a doorbel camera that under NO curcumstances should they purchase a TP-LINK camera.
I currently have some 13 Tapo P110 Powwr outlet switches and I will also be replacing these over the next year or so as a mtter of principle with the lack of response from the manufacturer.
Is there any way we can get the upper management to reply to our queries / requests?

Hi All,
Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding the pre-recording functionality of our cameras. We appreciate the opportunity to explain how our technology handles event capture across different models.
Currently, pre-recording capabilities depend on the specific power architecture of your Tapo camera:
- Non-Battery Powered Cameras (Wired):
These models fully support pre-recording. Because they have a continuous power supply, they can maintain a temporary buffer, allowing them to save 4 seconds of footage from immediately before a motion event is detected.
- Battery-Powered Cameras (Standard):
By design, these cameras remain in a "sleep" state to conserve energy, waking up only when the motion sensor is triggered. Consequently, they cannot capture videos prior to the wake-up event.
- Battery-Powered Cameras (with 24/7 Capture):
If your battery model supports the 24/7 Capture feature, it can simulate a pre-recording effect. In this mode, the camera captures periodic images and automatically records when an event is detected. You can refer to the following instructions to learn more about the 24/7 Capture feature.
How can I enable the 24/7 Capture on Battery Camera?
If your camera is not capturing complete motion events, we recommend checking your camera's installation and settings to ensure the detection functionality is working properly.
What to do if the Detection feature is not working on the TP-Link Camera?
If the same phenomenon persists, we suggest starting a new thread here for further assistance.
We value your feedback and are committed to continually improving our products.
Best Regards

@Solla-topee
Thank you for explaining this however this should be made clear on the sales publicity for this item.
I believe that the sales pitch is somewhat misleading!
Also I find it unbelievable that it takes some rwo years, since the initial post which was made on 2024-01-06, for someone to reply to the forum explaining this.
As I said before I would certainly not recommend this to anyone looking to make a purchase of a camera for monitoring their property.
