Model: Tapo D235
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Tapo D235 dooebell which is only a couple of weeks old is always going offline and telling me it can't communicate at the moment. It has a wifi signal speed of 31mps and -47 RSSI quality. it is situated less than a metre from the signal sender and the signal only has to go through one pane of glass. Does this indicate there is a problem with the unit (bought direct from manufacturer) or is there something I can do to get it to stay connected? At the moment it seems to have a mind of its own(AI maybe) and only connects when it wants to. Any help would be appreceiated before I give up and box it up for return, thank you in advance.

As a add on to this post, I also get a message saying 'Network unstable' and I can see above the live stream picture(when I can get one) the KB's figure constantly changing, ranging from 0 to 375Kb's. Not sure what this means if anything or what to do about it as my wifi is rock solid everwhere I test it including infront of the doorbell.

Dear Tapo D235 users! If your doorbell is experiencing frequent WiFi disconnection issues, and you're using a Sky router, then this situation is likely due to compatibility problems between the router and the doorbell.

The good news is that a beta firmware version is currently available to address this issue. If you're interested in trying it, please send me a private message with the following content:

[Tapo D235 WiFi disconnection issue with Sky router] + Mac address of your Tapo D235 + Model of your Sky router

Before the Upgrade:
(1) Please be sure you have read the
Beta Test Agreement before upgrading the Pre-release firmware!
(2)
How to update the firmware of the Tapo devices on the Tapo App
(3) Firmware downgrade is not supported. When a new official version is released, updating it will overwrite the beta version.

  @900Sport  It is good to hear that evrything is going well withn your D235 since switching from Sky to Virgin media broadband.....After many months of constant discussions with helpful Tapo engineer the issues with my D235 and Sky router has finally been resolved also with no lagging or drop outs following the latest firmware release sent to me (Version 1.2.0 Build 250724 Ref. 64364n).. This has taken many months to resolve but thankfully everything now working fine with the D235 and Sky SR203 router......

Hi Wayne-TP, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Not sure what you mean by verifying what kind of disconnection I have other than what the actual app tells me as I stated and the link you sent me to only tells me to do what I already have i.e. make sure I have a strong and good quality signal which I have with the router within a metre of the doorbell. The doorbell has the latest updates as it was only just initialised and updated recently. All this is in the post and I can't see anything on the page where you directed me that goes further than I already have.

  @AllanRob

What's the led status of the doorbell when problem happens? Do you see the doorbell show offline in the app? Or does it show online but fail to load the live stream? Any error message?

What's the hardware and firmware version of the doorbell?

  @Wayne-TP Hi Wayne,

Firmware 1.1.16

Hardware 1.0

Led not showing on doorbell

Error messages ...all in app....Doorbell offline, Device unreachable, network is unstable at the moment please try again later.

Have rebooted numerous times and have changed source of wifi signal three times.

When I try the doorbell it rings and when I check the app sometimes its fine and working as it should be and other times up come the error mesages ..randomly in any order and at any time. And at all times the wifi signal is fine. I have spent more time in the last week standing on the doorstep testing wifi signals than is good for me and my neighbours are starting to ask questions of my sanity.

  @AllanRob

Is doorbell's status led set to Off? You can re-enable it in the doorbell settings, device's led status is a useful information to tell the current state of the smart device.

Typically, there are three situations in disconnection issues: device disconnected from cloud (local only), disconnected from wifi, app connection issue (device is online but the app cannot control the it).

Do you see the doorbell online (and able to watch it) in the app when the phone connects to the same local wifi network? Turn off cellular data, and disable VPN, ad-blocker apps and other relevant apps if any.

  @Wayne-TP Just to reply to this post which is a common fault/issue with the D235 I have had the identical issue for number of months. It is hardwired with genuine SD card purchased direct from manufacturer. Sky wifi broadband 500 FFTTP, 12 inches between router and doorbell, no electronics nearby such as home landlines etc. Latest firmware..Have 3 outdoor Tapo cameras 50 feet from router that have NEVER dropped connection and work flawlessly. Sky router SR203..

Have been in contact with Tapo given them ping test results all in acceptable ranges......Excellent signal of .-23 RSSI ...Anyway today Tapo senior engineer contacted me to say they are now fully aware of this issue with Sky router SR203 and are in process of doing a beta firmware update to solve this issue and will roll it out in due course.. For everyones info.

  @BetterDays2972  Thanks for the info. This makes more sense than just being told to reboot or move the front door closer to the router. i am on the verge of binning it and buying another make. Because of your information and taking the time to post it I will wait and see what happens in the near future. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing! This will be helpful for someone who also has the same router.

I have the same problem with the D235 constantly dropping off line (purchased 12/05/2025). As with previous comments it is the only Tapo item that drops off line, the rest of them are stable and 15-20 m away from the router Sky 203.  It worked well with no problems until it updated about 2 weeks ago.  I am being sent a replacement so I am hoping it is not some sort of weird conflict with the router, the fact that it worked OK for several weeks (with the Sky 203) indicated to me the firmware update is suspect.

  @900Sport Yes, I am also ripping my hair out with this known issue with the D235..!! All my other Tapo outdoor and indoor cameras work flawlessly never dropping out despite being 50 feet from my Sky router.. The D235 is 15 inches from it and constantly drops out frequently every day..

I am in constant contact with one of Tapo senior engineers on this sending him ping tests, diagnostic logs etc.. They are aware of problems of connectivity with Sky SR203 and did send me a beta firmware update three days ago however that it just as bad and still continually dropping wifi connection. They are still investigating this issue but I do not hold any hope for an early fix..

I see you have asked for a new SR203 router from Sky and would be interested to hear if it fixes your issue when the new router arrives please. Did you just ring Sky over the doorbell issue for a new router request as I am thinking about asking Sky for a new SR203.

Lets all on the forum with this issue keep in touch and I will persevere with the Tapo engineers to get a "fix" for this disconnection problem, and as we know, this was not a cheap purchase for the D235...

So frustrated.......
