Model: Tapo C500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0

Hi everyone,

I have two C500 cameras. One is working as intended, but the other refuses to accept the latest firmware update (from about 2 months ago). Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Automatic and manual firmware update modes

  • Removing the SD card

  • Enabling diagnostic mode

  • Having the cam literraly on the WiFi router

  • ...

In every case, it stays stuck on "Firmware updating." After waiting anywhere from a few hours to days, I end up unplugging and replugging it, which just returns the camera to its previous state.

According to the support site, my next option was to reset the camera. However, pressing the reset button for more than 10 seconds does nothing—no lights, no reset, no response.

I also tried disabling WiFi on my router. This made the LED blink red, but I still couldn't reset the camera.

The support site’s last suggestion was to remove the camera from the app. I did this, but it didn’t change anything. Pressing the reset button for 5 or 10 seconds, unplugging/replugging with or without WiFi—none of it made a difference.

Now, since I removed the camera from the app, I can’t add it back because there’s no “add via IP” option, and I can’t get it into initial setup mode. The camera is still working (responds to ping and streams via RTSP), but I’m stuck.

My basic observations:

  • The reset button appears to be faulty (hardware or software)

  • The camera software may also be faulty, since it won’t accept the firmware update

Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

What's the current led status of the camera? Does the led show any changes when you try to reset it?

Please note that the camera should be powered on performing the reset step. As you have mentioned there were no lights when trying reset the camera, which doesn't seem right.

However, pressing the reset button for more than 10 seconds does nothing—no lights, no reset, no response.

Make sure to press the correct reset button, you may try to press it for a longer time, like 15s or 20s. If the led doesn't show any change during the reset, this device might need to be replaced. Contact the retailer or local TP-Link support to proceed with the warranty.

  @Wayne-TP

Hi, thanks for your reply.

" What's the current led status of the camera?"

Steady red

"Does the led show any changes when you try to reset it?

No

" Please note that the camera should be powered on performing the reset step. As you have mentioned there were no lights when trying reset the camera, which doesn't seem right."

Of course, I have proceeded with resetting this cam and my other C500 and C200 multiple times in the past.

"Make sure to press the correct reset button"

I do.

" you may try to press it for a longer time, like 15s or 20s"

I did, more than 60 sec even, and more than once.

What would be helpful is if you could give me a way to add back the cam to the Tapo App please (without resetting, since, I can't).

As a reminder, the cam is working as I can see the stream via RTSP.

Thanks for your support.

Unfortunately the camera seems bricked if it stays in solid red state and has no response to reset. It's really weird that the RTSP stream is still operating. There are no methods to recover the camera at this moment. You may contact the retailer or the local TP-Link support to proceed with the warranty.
