Excuse me. I am not very tech savvy.

 

I had a problem accessing camera feed via tapo app on my phone while not on the same wifi network as the camera. Quick search said port forwarding 554 on the router was the solution, which worked. Apparently there was a step I missed which was to set up a user id and password within the advanced setting. Does this mean the camera feed was accessible openly in public?

Hi,
Typically, once you have set up the camera successfully, it will connected to our cloud server, and you can watch the camera remotely via our cloud server with the Tapo app. In this situation, only the person who has your TP-Link account & password can watch the camera via the Tapo app, and there is no need to open ports on your router or set up a username & password in the Advanced Settings on the Tapo app.

 

Only when you try to watch the camera remotely via RTSP connection with a third-party app/program, you need to open port 554 on your router and set up a username & password in the Advanced Settings on the Tapo app. 

How to view Tapo camera on PC/NAS/NVR through RTSP/Onvif Protocol
