Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.2

Hello,

I'm experiencing a serious issue with the Tapo app on my Android 10 device.

Initially, the app stopped accessing my cameras and showed the error: "Internet too slow" even though my internet connection was stable and fast.

To try to fix it, I logged out of the app. However, after that, I haven’t been able to log in again. Every time I try, it shows the error: "Error, try again later."

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Reinstalled the app (multiple times)
  • Cleared cache and app data
  • Changed my Tapo account password
  • Restarted the phone

None of these steps resolved the problem.

Important notes:

  • I can log in successfully on a different phone running Android 15.
  • I can also log in on an iOS device with no issues.

It seems the issue is specific to Android 10. Please let me know if there is a known compatibility issue or if there’s a workaround or fix.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  @Fangy

 Hi,
Currently, the Tapo app can be installed and works on an Android 10 phone. For the reported behavior, please confirm the following information.

  1. What's the model number of the Android 10 phone?
  2. What's the Tapo app version installed on this phone? Have you downloaded the Tapo app from Google Play?
  3. Do you have an internet connection on this phone?
  4. Please check if special apps are running on this phone, such as VPN, firewall, or antivirus apps, and so on.
  5. Try to connect your phone to another Wi-Fi network or use the mobile data, and check if it helps.

Best Regards

  @Solla-topee

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Please find the requested information below:

1. Phone/Tablet Model: Chuwi Hi9 Air (Android 10)

2. Tapo App Version: 3.13.512 (Downloaded from the Google Play Store)

3. Internet Connection: The tablet is currently Wi-Fi only (no SIM card). It has a stable internet connection.

4. Other Apps: No VPN, firewall, or antivirus apps are running.

5. Network: I’ve tried switching between multiple networks, my home Wi-Fi, mobile hotspot, and my parents Wi-Fi, but the issue still persists.

The app was working fine last week, so I’m not sure what has changed since i only use the tablet for this app. Please advise on what else I can try.

Best regards,

Fangy

  @Fangy

Hi,
Please confirm the following information for further analysis of the reported behavior.

  1. Do you have the reported behavior after updating the Tapo app or your tablet's OS?
  2. Please use your tablet's Screen Recorder feature to record a video showing the process of logging in to the Tapo app on it until the error message appears.
  3. What's the model number of your router? Please describe your network diagram in detail, such as internet -- wireless router ))) ((( cameras, phones, tablets.

You can upload the video to your cloud server (such as Google Drive), generate a download link, and send it to me (@Solla-topee) via a private message.

Best Regards

I started receiving the exact same error message on one of my Android 11 devices last month with the Tapo app when trying to login ("Error. Please try again later"). At first I thought it was something on my device, but now my second device on Android 12 started with the exact same symptoms the last week. Now all my Tapo devices are essentially bricks.

  • This happens when using cellular and WiFi
  • No blocking, VPN, or firewalling
  • Kasa app woks fine
  • One device is Samsung, the other is OnePlus
  • Nothing of significance logged in Android logcat
  • I see the Tapp app has established network connections to 54.156.151.168 (Amazon AWS address), TCP port 444
  • Tried clearing app data, uninstalling, and reinstalling the app
  • I've tried installing several older versions of the Tapo app and the issue still occurs
  • If I enter an incorrect email and password, I still get the same error so it appears the issue is not account related.

Given that there are successful TCP connections from the app and the account I'm signing in with doesn't make a difference, the issue appears to be on the TP-Link server side.

TP-Link - what are you doing to resolve this?? What changes were made in the last 6 weeks on the server side?  Did you developers change something that's causing issues with older devices logging in?

Also, when are you going have a web site that users can go to in order to control their devices as a backup when there are issues like this?

  @IoTProgrammer

Hi,
It's hard to say the TP-Link server has an issue; we did tests with different phones, and there is no problem logging into the Tapo app.

For the reported phenomenon, please confirm the information in this post for further analysis. Then, please send us the Tapo app version installed on both of your phones.

Best Regards

  @Solla-topee

I was just using Tapo App version 3.13.818 and tried several different versions that were working going back to Tapo App version 3.9.208.

There is no router involved since my main device is using cellular data only.

I setup the second device so I could to a packet capture on it and see an SSL connection setup with Tapo's cloud in AWS n-account-api.tplinkcloud.com (3.208.141.9 is one of the IPs I see).

Has Tapo tested with Android versions 10, 11, and 12?

It would take some time to decompile the app and change the certificate trust model to decrypt the communications to see if there's anything useful to use in the server's response to the login request.

Please if anyone else is having this issue and viewing this post, add your info here.
