Description

When the Tapo doorbell D225, D235, and TD25 update to the above firmware versions, you may notice that the doorbell disconnects from the router's WiFi (specifically, the 2.4GHz band of the main network) and cannot reconnect successfully, appearing offline in the Tapo app. Together with the following phenomena:

1. The LED indicator blinks in a cycle: red for 1 second, followed by amber for 6 seconds.

2. The doorbell can return to the configuration mode (LED blinking red and green) after a manual reset, but when re-adding the device, the doorbell fails to connect to the WiFi despite using the correct password.

3. The device's connection will not be affected when the doorbell connects to a guest network.

So far, we have discovered that several reports are all using the same router, the Vodafone Ultra Hub DGM4980VDF.

Workaround

1. Set router DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS).

2. Reset the doorbell and connect it to the 2.4GHz guest network.

Troubleshooting Suggestions

If the above workaround doesn't work for you, please follow the troubleshooting steps below when configuring the doorbell:

1. Ensure you are using the correct Wi-Fi password. A good way to verify this is to remove the saved network from your phone and reconnect using the same password. If your phone fails to connect, it means the password is incorrect. How to remove existing wireless network profile on Android&iPhone

2. Make sure your Tapo app is updated. You can try deleting and reinstalling the app.

3. Verify the WiFi network settings:

  • Ensure the WiFi is a 2.4GHz-only network. If both 2.4GHz and 5GHz are enabled for the same SSID, disable the 5GHz.
  • Confirm there are no Mac Filtering or Client Isolation enabled for the 2.4GHz network.

4. Move the doorbell closer to the router.

5. Reboot the router.

6. Update router firmware.

Our R&D team is currently working on this case with high priority. We will share updates here if there is any progress. We also encourage users experiencing the same problem to share additional details about their cases, such as:

1. The model of the router;

2. Settings for the router’s main 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, including:

  • SSID (wifi name) >> What elements are included in the SSID, like numbers, letters, or characters? Length?
  • The WiFi channel that the 2.4GHz uses. *If Auto is selected, try to find what channel the 2.4GHz wifi is on currently.
  • WiFi security type

Hi @Wayne-TP

Unfortunatly none of the steps above worked.

- Router, even AP's changed to Google DNS, One as backup, back to Google's backup. 2.4Ghz only, also tried 5Ghz for good measure.

- Tried Ruckus Unleached APs, Unifi APs.

- App updated (android), D235v1 updated (via guest network)

- Router rebooted, APs rebooted, Switches, hell even Coax filter reset and replugged UTP's.

- I tried moving the doorbell between 20cm and 5m various times.

- Tried my default IoT SSID's (BF IoT) and made a single word lowercase SSID (fbiot) with password with caps, without, number, letters,...

Look, it's been about 5 hours of troubleshooting and this is absurd. Reddit/facebook is full of posts from this doorbell, the firmware has still not been updated since September '25 and the batch of new Tapo camera's I got today have connected to my wifi within a minute.

Wayne, what are we going to do about this? I have no doorbell right now. Do I really have to go trough a 3 weeks RMA?

I have set up a guest network with a limit of 1 device, but this is so unsecure in my profession that I'm lucky most of the people living around me know how to use a kindle and that's about it. Myu boss would fire me if he knew I did this in my own house lol

Can we push this issue to the TP-Devs?

Edit: Someone got it to work by pressing the theft protectrion button (middle) and reset button for 8 seconds, then press the reset button again for 5 seconds. It worked for some, not for me. Maybe good to report this info?
