Hi,
Typically, when Smart Mode is selected on the Night Mode Settings page, when the camera goes into Night mode, it turns on the spotlight when detecting events.
If you select Night Mode on the camera's live view page, the camera will remain in that mode, regardless of whether it's day or night. Then Smart Mode will continue to function during the day, activating the spotlight when events are detected. This behavior is normal and aligns with your configuration.

If you want the camera to operate in Day Mode during the day and automatically switch to Night Mode at night, illuminating its spotlight upon detecting events, then set the video mode on the Live View page to Auto and select Smart Mode on the Night Mode Settings page. The reason these settings aren't working as expected in your scenario is that the camera isn't automatically switching to Night mode, which might be because its location is well-lit at night.
It's recommended to check for any light sources around the camera at night; you can test by turning off the nearby lights.

Best Regards

  @JaapWal The lights are Infra Red which we cannot see through our eyes. You should be able to see them glow a bright red if you view through a camera phone. You should be able to see a better picture when they activate,

Hi,
The following article may help you. In your situation, on the camera's Live View page, please set the Video mode to Auto, and on the camera's Night Mode Settings page, please select the Smart mode. Then, the camera will turn on the spotlight in the dark when it detects events.

So these settings are in the Tapo app, but the spotlight doesn't turn on when there's movement!

Hi,
Please confirm the following information about the reported phenomenon.

  1. When there is no movement in the dark, does the camera display a black-and-white live view page?
  2. Can you receive a detection notification on the Tapo app or your phone when there is a movement? Please ensure the detection feature is working.
  3. Have you enabled the Motion Tracking/Auto Tracking feature? If so, please disable it for a try.
  4. You can try to reboot the camera or factory reset it and reconfigure it, then test if the camera will work properly.

Best Regards

   @Solla-topee

1. the camera produces color images

2. I receive notifications upon detection

3. auto tracking is enabled, I will turn it off

4. Already tried restarting the camera

If the above does not help, there is no other option than a factory reset

thanks in advance for your solutions

Hi,
If the camera displays a colorful live view page in the dark without the spotlight on, it means the camera works in Day mode. While the Smart Mode works only when the camera is in Night mode.

Typically, when the video mode is set to Auto on the camera's live view page, it automatically switches between Day and Night modes based on the ambient lighting conditions. If the camera works in Day mode in your scenario, it might be because the ambient lighting is sufficient. Could you please send us a screenshot of the camera's live view page for analysis?
You can upload the screenshot to your cloud server (such as Google Drive), generate a download link, and send it to me (@Solla-topee) via a private message.

Best Regards

  @JaapWal

Good morning,
It's now 10:45 a.m. in the Netherlands, so we'll have to wait until it's dark.
To clarify:
When approaching the front door where the camera is located, I'd like the spotlight to come on, whether it's me or a potential burglar, even in the dark. I like having enough light to open the door. This will also act as a deterrent to unauthorized persons.

If I set the setting to Night mode in live view, the spotlight turns on when there is movement, but this also happens during the day if there is sufficient light.
