Person detection in poor daylight
I am finding person detection and tracking to be very poor (usually non existent) after dark in day mode. Why would I be using day mode after dark you may ask. The answer is I am not, the camera is set to auto, but it does not switch to night mode while street lighting is on.

Hi,
When the Video mode is set to Auto, the Tapo Camera automatically switches between Day and Night modes based on the ambient lighting conditions. In your situation, if the streetlights are bright, it's normal for the camera not to switch to night mode. We recommend adjusting the camera's position to avoid including streetlights in its field of view.

Hi @Solla-topee
Thank you for your response. As this is not a practical solution for any position at the front of a house a few metres from the road where a street light is on the opposite side of the road, and is no doubt an issue reproduced in many homes, may I suggest more appropriate recommendations?
1. Allow the user to schedule night mode similarly to how the alarm can be scheduled (you could also give the choice of selecting an auto night mode setting, programmed to activate from dusk to dawn according to the time of year).
2. I think I saw details for another camera which allowed you to adjust the amount of ambient light in which the night mode would operate. If I am right and this feature were enabled for this camera that could also be answer perhaps!
Kind Regards, Mike

Hi,
Thank you for your detailed explanation. You can vote and leave your usage scenario on the thread "Schedule day/night (IR) mode" for evaluation.

@Solla-topee thank you for your response. I have left a comment on the thread you mentioned but I do not know how to vote.
Also there is quite a long delay before the light which enables colour vision comes on in night mode, meaning that it comes on much too long after detection to be useful. I'm not sure if this is the same thing as the spotlight, but the spotlight also has quite a long delay before it comes on – when a person has been detected for example. Again, this makes the spotlight much less useful as a deterrent.

Hi,
Usually, on the first page of a feature request thread, you can see the number of votes on this thread, and you can tap it to vote.
Regarding the phenomenon of the spotlight illuminating with a delay after the camera detects an event, it's suggested to start a new thread here with the following information for further assistance.
1. A detailed description of the phenomenon you experience.
2. Your camera's Detection settings on the Device Settings > Detection page, such as what detection types are enabled, and what the sensitivity value is.
3. Have you enabled the motion tracking/auto tracking feature?

Hi @Solla-topee sorry to bypass your suggestion but I will use it if I continue to notice a pattern of the issue recurring. I just wanted to check whether the tracking and sensitivity setting affects spotlight delay and if so in what way? Yes I use person tracking but only person tracking. I also have line detection set. That is all. Alarm is set 1.30am to 5.30am light only (30 seconds).

Hi,
We currently can't confirm whether the camera's detection or tracking feature will affect the spotlight delay. We would appreciate it if you could provide more relevant information to help identify the phenomenon.

@Solla-topee thank you again for your reply. I will try and do this if I identify evidence but incidents are few and far between and I'm finding it very difficult to work out from playback whether the spotlight has come on or not. I think there may have been one or two incidents of colour detection though - does this mean the spotlight has been on?

Hi,
On the C520WS's Device Settings > Video & Display > Night Mode Settings page, if Smart Mode is selected, the camera will turn on the spotlight when detecting an event and display a colorful image in the Live View page when the camera is in Night mode. After the event leaves the monitoring area, the camera will return to a black-and-white image.

@Solla-topee Thank you for your message. From recordings last night I can see that after a detection event the colour mode comes on after about six seconds. My concern is that that is more than enough time for an intruder to traverse my front drive and climb over the gate before it comes on after which they will be out of view. As the tracking seems to kick in immediately, I don't see why the spotlight does not as well.
One additional phenomenon which I have noticed once before happened again last night. Last night it was between 12.30am and 1.00am and again between 6am and 7.57am. On 20th December it was between 6am and 7:30am. The camera records line detections continuously often in consecutive 3 minute clips. Occasionally they are shorter but even then they may be consecutive. At the same time, the screen displays a usually quite dense random appearance of grey or perhaps white streaks darting along. They vary in intensity and direction, but usually are all going in predominantly the same direction in any given clip, giving the impression that they maybe are being wind and wind gust driven. There is no indication of any cause of line detection going on on the ground.
