Model: Tapo H500
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I am new to Tapo cameras but not new to security cameras. I just recently and wholesale shifted from Arlo to Tapo… I now have 9 cameras across our property... C460, C465, C660's

Each is solar and back to my Wi-Fi ... Each I have either a 64GB or 128GB card

Each I set 24/7 on 5s increments to sharpen up the detection.

I mix night vision modes and motion detection dependent on the positioning/camera to remove false positives particularly when its raining ... C660's are pretty rough there. (Hoping the training is helping).

I would love to see the H500 benefit me but I think the below is correct which leads me to see it as a negative for my deployment not a positive ;

1.. The facial recognition isn’t that great from cameras mounted up high and from a distance so thats not a clear benefit (thought it might remove known alerts incl pets)

2.. You can’t do any enhanced training with the Hub e.g change a deer from a pet to an animal or a deers behind from a person to a deer etc..

3.. It only handles 4 instances of 7/24 feeds I believe... assume bandwidth and onboard compute capabilities.

4.. The backup Wi-Fi is direct to the hub not the Wi-Fi to the hub so isnt viable for outdoor distance

5.. The claims on AI enhancement is value for older cameras

6.. I don’t worry about theft (on camera vs. hub)

7.. There is no thumbnail alert (Eufy does this with the hub for free)

8.. I can’t have a hybrid storage model (this would be ideal)  e.g my primary storage is on cameras and it just sends alert videos to hub for further AI enhancements, thumbnails and timeline correlation.

9..To the above point, there is no correlated timeline e.g having a hub doesn’t consolidate the cameras into one blended alert which actually surprised me the most.. I expects the hub to make me feel I am handling a single system NOT 9 different security systems !

10.. I dont need to monitor feeds live, just work off iphone alerts for pet locaiton, predator alerts and unknown visitors

I suspect things will change and assume the hub is epic for

1.. anyone with older cameras

2.. anyone worried about theft and securing the feeds

3.. anyone binding other Tapo devices (motion, lights, leakage etc..) into the hub as well or pushing to Apple Home with Matter

For me with new cameras, I can’t figure out a justification except bulk local storage which without handling all my cameras on 7/24 or a hybrid approach actually is a feature walk back ..

hmmm.. am I wrong ? ?

Zero value. I just bought one and foolishly thought i could migrate everything from the h200 to the h500 but no - cameras only, no sensors.

Also having all recordings in one place now is daft, villains only need to nick the h500 and not every sd card.

Regretting buying the thing.
