Firmware Version: 1.3.5

Hey everyone,

I bought a Tapo C201 last week and about 3 days ago it restarted (I could hear it doing the start-up procedure) but didn't connect to my WiFi router as the LED was blinking red. I had to turn it off at the mains and turn it back on after which it connected.

It just restarted again (which is the reason I am posting this) but connected to WiFi this time. I'm not sure about how many times this has happened when I didn't hear it or wasn't at home.

I bought it as I will be leaving the country for 2 weeks in 3 days and the flat will be empty so wanted a bit of security. I would really like to get the issue sorted out before leaving. I don't mind the restarting; it's the fact that it didn't reconnect that one time that is bothering me.

As I will be leaving for 2 weeks I actually turned off auto update because I didn't want a permanent disconnect as it was updating and rebooting. I am also using the free trial of Tapo Cloud so there is no microSD card in the camera.

The 2.4GHz frequency on my router uses smart channels so I assumes it switches channels depending on which one is better? It does give me the option to stick to one channel. It uses WPA3-Personal-Compatibility as the security type (which is the default) though I also have the option to use WPA3-Personal-Transition or WPA3-Personal. WPS is turned off.

Anyone know what the issue could be?

Some advice would be really appreciated, thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing the detailed information. To better assess the situation, could you please help confirm the following first:
Approximately when do the restarts occur, and how often have you noticed them so far?
Have you enabled any scheduled reboot / auto‑reboot feature on the camera or router?

Please also note that after a firmware update is completed successfully, the camera will automatically reboot once, which is normal behavior.

In the meantime, we recommend trying the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Ensure that your camera is running the latest firmware version available.
2. Disconnect the camera from a Third-Party app/program if it connects to a Third-Party app/program via RTSP/ONVIF protocol.
3. Ensure that you are using the original power supply provided with the camera.
4. Ensure that the camera is placed in a well-ventilated area and not in an enclosed space. Avoid placing the camera near heat sources that can contribute to overheating.
For more details, please refer to this article: What Can I Do if My Camera Frequently Stucks or Reboots?

If the camera continues to reboot unexpectedly or fails to reconnect reliably after these checks, we strongly recommend that you contact the support team as soon as possible so they can follow up with deeper analysis and provide next‑step assistance before your trip.

Best Regards.

Hi   @Hilbert-TP   thanks for the reply.

I have noticed the camera restart twice, once was at about 8pm (this was the time it didn't connect to WiFi and the LED was blinking red) and the other time was about 11am 3 days later and this time it connected without an issue.

The router is always turned on and I have not enabled any type of auto reboot on the camera.

The camera is running the latest firmware, it is only connected to the Tapo app, I'm using the original power supply and the camera is standing on an empty table (the current outdoor temperature is 16 Celsius).

I currently have motion detection, person detection and tamper detection turned on. Do you think that the person detection algorithm is causing the CPU in the camera to overheat?

Hello,
Thank you for the detailed update and for confirming the restart times and setup.

Under normal circumstances, enabling multiple detection types (such as motion, person, and tamper detection) should not cause the camera to overheat or trigger unexpected restarts. The behavior you described is not expected.

To ensure we can assist you as quickly and effectively as possible, we recommend that you contact the support team directly for further follow‑up.

Best Regards.
