@blackjacksbark

Actually very few TP-Link routers support Time Machine.  We have two FAQs that talk about using this feature

https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1564/  and https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2729/

At the top you will see a link for this article applies to.   click there to see what models support this feature.

@Carl So it's safe to assume if I don't see the Time Machine option under USB setting then I am unable to use this with my Time Machine?

Yeah If time machine is not in the settings the router does not support the feature.

@Carl Do you have a list of your routers that support Time Machine? This was one of the reasons I purchased the AC1750 :(

@Carl Just for clarification - if a TPLINK router supports time machine (from your above list of hardware that supports it), does that mean that those routers then support exFAT and HFS file systems?  Thank you.

Time machine only supports specific formats. In the past, TP Link did not support those formats. The routers did support exFAT and other formats common to Windows. The TM supported routers would have to support one of the TM supported formats or Time Machine will not work. see https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/types-of-disks-you-can-use-with-time-machine-mh15139/mac. You will need to check the specs or user manual to see if it supports the format you use. For example from the Archer C8 V4 user manual - If you use a USB hard drive, make sure its file system is FAT32, exFat, NTFS or HFS+.

@ArcherC8

I currently have an archer c7 which does not read an exFat drive.  I'm not necessarily interested in using time machine, but I do want to access (read/write) files from a drive connected to the router on my Mac computers.  I have ordered an ac2300 which I understand should do this since my c7 does not?

@tysonlj

Many of our routers inculding older models like the Archer C7 did not support MacOS file extensions. The C2300 does support ExFat

I have an Archer C8 V1 which does not support Time Machine. The V4 model does. I have a USB drive attached to my C8 router and can read and write from my Apple and Window PCs. As I recall I am using FAT32 format. To get to the drive, I enter into my browser smb://192.168.0.1 and press enter. Then the drive will appear in Finder. I can even get to it from my iPads. All the apps can now get to it except Time Machine. For Time Machine, I attach a different USB drive direct to my Apple iMac and laptop.
