Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.5.1 Build 20210126 Rel. 59387

Help!  This is driving me crazy.

I had been running a 3 unit Deco M9 Plus network for over a month without issues.  It had firmware version 1.2.12 (out of the box).

Of course this was the version that claimed you were "up to date" on the Deco app, and the web interface was not enabled.  After realizing that our bedtime settings were assuming the wrong time zone, I updated to the most current firmware, 1.5.1 Build 20210126 Rel. 59387.

Since then, we are experiencing all kinds of network issues.  The units drop the internet and reset several times a day.  When this occurs, the units reset and come back online within a few minutes without intervention.  The network map usually indicates that the main unit is still online, and the two remote units are rebooting.

Tonight, however, I watched the main unit go offline 8 times in a row, cycling from working normally (green), to red, yellow, then green again.  Each cycle took a few minutes.  This is ridiculous.

Log files show the unit throwing all kinds of errors, many that seem a bit suspicious.

Now, it doesn't take much sluething to realize this all comes after upgrading to the latest firmware and changing my time zone...and the time zone probably isn't the culprit.

Has anyone else had this much trouble with the new firmware?  Any suggestions on how to overcome this?

thanks.

@Vermonty

Try logging into the web GUI of the Deco to see if all nodes are running the 1.5.1 firmware: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2641/

Another thing to try is to swap the Deco with another satellite unit to see if the new main continues to reset. If so, move it to another outlet, and see if it continues to reboot.

@Tony

Well, I believe I have solved this issue.

I had a list of blocked Apps/Websites defined under "Parental Controls" for one user.  This list was...

z.moatoads.com

tapestry.tapad.com

Psiphon 3

et-eus.w.inmobi.com

Whenever that user played a word game on iOS called "Wordscapes", it would immediately crash all Deco units on our network.  If the user continued to play the game, the Deco units would crash, reboot on their own, come online for ~30 seconds, crash, reboot, repeat.

I deleted all four blocked websites from parental controls, and all reboot problems have stopped.

These blocked websites were in place for several months, and never caused an issue with the previous firmware version.  The issue only started after upgrading to the newest firmware.

It looks like visiting certain blocked websites can trigger a crash/reboot of the Deco network.  Yikes.  This is definitely a bug that needs to get corrected.

@Vermonty I wound up turning off the anti-virus function. As soon as I turned it off all the issues stopped.

Has everything beem stable with 1.5.1 since you figured out the issue with the lists? I ask becase I am considering upgrading but am hesitant due to some of these known issues.

@isoneedacoffee the only thing that worked for me was turning off the anti-virus. Once I did that it worked like a charm and no more issues. Of course, I have no anti-virus on my router but hopefully, the anti-virus on my individual devices hooked up to it will be sufficient.

After the change I noted, the network has been stable without any further issues.

@Vermonty Thanks for the replies! I actually just made the uograde to version 1.4.3, which appears stable and has few known issues. Would there be advantages in the 1.5.1 over the 1.4.3. that would be worth it (especially considering turning off antivirus and such in the latest version)?

@isoneedacoffee

There are some new features added on the 1.5.x:

1. Added support for whitelist under Malicious Content Filters of Antivirus.
2. Optimized the IPTV/VLAN feature-support IPTV VLAN on satellite Deco units.
3. Added Network Optimization feature.
4. Added the switch of "ignore Ping from WAN".
5. Added the feature of changing the owner account.
