As the authentication methods of public Wi-Fi is not uniform, it's hard to say for sure that range extender could connect to a public hotspot with no problem.
We recommend to use extender with a Wi-Fi router not a public Wi-Fi.
RE should be able to connect to a Wi-Fi network with commonly used wireless securities ( normally WPA/WPA2 PSK, for more details refer to range extender spec our official website).
