Can I plug in my tp link Wi-Fi extender behind a couch. What I'm asking is can the back of the couch be up against the extender or it has to be open

Usually it is recommend to place range extender in an open area, rather than being not blocked by obstacles which may affect Wi-Fi reception,we have an FAQ that might help:
You may test the real performance in that location and see if RE work stable when plugged in sockets behind couch.
