I see the deco p7 is now considered end of life, despite it being basically the same as the m5, which gets continued updates. 

 

I assume it's safe to say I need to upgrade to a new router, if I want to get updated software or added features, right?

I am afraid yes.

There are some features that as long as the main Deco is capable, the whole Mesh will support as well.

So you could add some Deco M5 units and put M5 as the main unit and continue using P7 for an extension.
