Two things. 1) Do I need to leave the main unit hard connected to my WiFi modem
2) my deco systems still have the setup WiFi n as me, not the main WiFi I wanted.

Yes, the first main Deco needs to be connected to the modem all the time.
2) my deco systems still have the setup WiFi n as me, not the main WiFi I wanted.
Yes, Deco will broadcast its own Mesh WiFi that is independent of the main Wi-Fi modem.
