Model: Deco X50 - Outdoor
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.4 Build 20230922 Rel. 71054

I added a new Deco x-50 to my XE5300 Mesh network.  I first added it while powered with the AC cord and wirelessly connected to the network.

Then I unplugged the power cord and plugged a short 3-ft ethernet cord from a satellite deco to the X50.  The unit does not turn on (no light).

I have no Switch in my setup, it just has Main Deco in Router mode with a Satellite that is connected by ethernet.  Since this satellite is connected to AC power and my ethernet for PoE on the x50 is very short, I should have the minimum power required. Seems simple.  Am I doing something wrong?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows network switches to transmit both power and data through an Ethernet cable simultaneously.

So if you want to run your devices you need a network switch that supports POE or use a POE injector

I recommend verifying that your Ethernet cable is compatible with Power over Ethernet (POE), as not all cables support this feature.

Thanks for the reply and idea.

I tried 4 different ethernet cables including the one that it came with as well as another one that came with my deco mesh units.

No luck.  I don't think it is the cable.

I do not have a switch at all, so most of that is irrelevant.

PoE should work on minimum Cat5e and I am using Cat6

PoE should transmit power up to 100m, I was testing <1m (about 3 feet).

Somebody on that FAQ link asked about DC power and the response was that a DC power adapter is included in the box.

I did not receive one, nor do I think this is even necessary.

Is there setting on the x50 Deco itself that needs to be set to use PoE instead of the AC Power cord?

I thought that simply plugging in the ethernet cable that is connected to the LAN port of another deco would power the X50.

The Deco X50-PoE can receive power from a PSE device, such as a PoE switch, through its PoE port. If you don't have a PoE switch, you can use a normal switch and a PoE injector or splitter to connect the Deco X50-PoE to a network. Here's how to connect a PoE device to a non-PoE switch:

  1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the PoE switch and the other end to the PoE splitter.
  2. Connect the PoE splitter's output cable to the non-PoE device's power port.
  3. Connect the PoE splitter's data output to the non-PoE device's Ethernet port

Hmm,

So the X50 does not work using PoE directly connected to a Deco main unit?

Perhaps I was misunderstanding this from the FAQ page:

In router mode, please note that the satellite Deco should be wired to the LAN port of the main Deco or a switch connected to the main Deco's LAN port to avoid a network loop.

So I thought that a switch was optional.

Do I need to have a switch as well?

I am not sure I understand your response below.

I do not have a PoE switch or a non-PoE switch.

and I am not sure what a PoE splitter is.

Are these things required in order to use PoE to power the X50?

Seems like it should state this somewhere in the documentation or installation instructions for the outdoor unit.

It is not mentioned at all.

In fact in the app it even says that I can unplug the AC now after I first added it

Hi, There is a FAQ about how to power Deco X50-POE properly:

General Questions About the PoE Feature on the Deco X50-PoE

Best regards.
