Model: Deco BE23   Deco XE75
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

My current setup is Spectrum 1Gbps Internet via:

Spectrum Modem > ethernet to XE75 (upstairs) > XE75 wireless backhaul (downstairs)

I am not using a Spectrum provided router, so I am using the Deco in Router mode.

My house is wired for ethernet, but I could not get the secondary XE75 wired backhaul to work no matter what I tried. I am an IT Pro, own a Fluke, confirmed all connections good, etc, just couldn't get the app to pick it up as wired. But that's ok. Regardless, I decided I wanted to add a few more APs throughout the house, especially since I get poor coverage on my front porch, and 0 out to the garage that has a smart garage door I would like to connect. So I ordered the BE23 3 pack in hopes to now have 5 APs to spread around, and this way can add WiFi 7 to the house and utilize my laptop's Wifi 7.

My questions:

1. Should scrap the current set up, returning the current XE75s to default, and start new?

2. Should I use the BE23 as the main Deco, and connect it directly to my Spectrum Modem?

3. Is there a particular setup I should avoid in order to still be able to utilize the 6ghz frequency that the XE75 features? I'd like to not loose this if possible, but if I must, that's okay.

4. Ideally, I would like to use a couple units in wired backhaul. I'm thinking set 1x BE23 as main to the modem, the other 2x BE23's on wired backhaul, and then the XE75's on wireless backfaul. Do you see any issue with this?

Any other things I should note with this setup?

Hoping to get this up and running tonight/this weekend if anyone is available to share their knowledge here!

Thank you!

  @Ohnopotato

Here is a side by side comparison of the BE23 deco vs the XE75 pro

https://www.tp-link.com/us/compare/?typeId=5757&productIds=91685%2C59146

To keep the 6 GHz band you will need to keep the XE75 as the main. Doing this "may" cause you to lose out on the faster WiFi speeds on the BE23 units.

If you're going losing the 6 GHz band then you can set your BE23 as your main unit.

There are two ways to switch the current main deco to another deco i have posted both options below.

Configuring multiple models of deco units to operate concurrently.

If you have multiple models of Deco units, it is recommended to designate the new model as the primary Deco and the older models as secondary units.

There are two methods to achieve this. Regardless of the option you choose, please ensure that your network is configured according to either the first or second examples in this image: https://static.tp-link.com/upload/faq/image-20240329074344-12_20240329144345n.png.

**Option #1 (Not recommended)**: For guidance, please refer to the following link: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2400/.

**Option #2**:

1. Reset all of your Deco units by pressing the reset button on each one.

2. Using the Deco app, set up your newest Deco as the main unit. Since you have factory reset each unit, you will be able to use the same network SSID and password as before.

3. Once the newer model is operational, return to the app and add the remaining Decos to your network.

  @HelpFixDecoApp

Thank you for the info! So, what exactly am I losing/missing out on (or potentially missing out on) if I keep the 75 as my main to use the 6ghz?

Which option would you personally go with? If it helps, I only have one device that is wifi7 capable. Is there anything that is better about the be23 over the xe75 if I'm only using wifi 6/6e?

To answer that I will need the hardware version of your XE75 you can find it at the bottom on the unit

  @Ohnopotato Not sure if you have to give up on anything except Deco mesh across BE23 and XE75.  Set up one BE23 as router, mesh the other 2.  Change the current XE75 router to Access Point mode, mesh the other XE75 to that.  Did you possibly contact support about failing to get Ethernet backhaul to work?  I looked through all version #s firmware descriptions and found what appears to mean all versions support it...

Just an FYI you can run the deocs in AP mode but there are a lot of features that work in router mode that do not work in AP mode

You can find the list of what works/doesn't work here https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2399/

  @HelpFixDecoApp Thanks for sharing that list.  I've run my Deco in AP mode before TP-Link opened 6 GHz-2 to device use...

I read through it, and isn't it a lot of those missing features can be controlled by the BE23 router/gateway even with devices on the AP network?  (I only have 1 Deco as I wait for the Version number increase in units on sale)...

  @jzchen

Based on my understanding, and noting that I have not tested this in AP mode, when switching from Wi-Fi Router to Access Point mode within the app, it appears that those options are no longer accessible.

I believe that the options you may lose when running in AP mode would then be controlled by the modem/router provided by your ISP or the one you purchased yourself.

To the best of my knowledge, it is not possible to keep the BE23 in Wi-Fi Router mode while configuring the other Deco units in Access Point mode. The Deco app allows for setting up multiple networks, so you could designate the BE23 as one network and configure the other units as a second network in AP mode; however, I do not believe these networks would communicate effectively. Additionally, this setup could potentially lead to significant interference.

  @Ohnopotato This FAQ explains a little more about switching to ethernet backhaul:

General questions about Ethernet Backhaul feature on your Deco | TP-Link

First it seems WiFi backhaul should be established, and while having strong WiFi connection, (meaning don't move it far away), connect ethernet backhaul.  Ethernet backhaul is supposed to automatically establish and WiFi backhaul automatically released.  (I have seen where there is actual settings that can be changed either on the web GUI or app, or at least to verify ethernet backhaul.

I would then try disconnecting power to the Deco node, relocate it, connect ethernet, then reconnect power. If you've already tried this then my apologies...
