Model: RE315   Archer AX21   RE715X
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I need some help. Been a TP link fan for a long time. Trying to setup a range extender from one metal building to another (about 170' in between them, and NO signal in the metal outbuilding). I am also using KASA switches in both buildings.

I have a cat6 cable buried between the two.

I configure the RE715 locally and then take it out to the external building.

When I try connecting the RE715 range extender to the cable, it knocks the AX-21 offline for internet connectivity. I see no options to turn it into an access point using the same OneMesh network, which is my goal.

I also have RE315/RE715 range extenders that I could use instead, but in reading here it appears that NEITHER can be used with a WIRED connection back to the main router (AX21). Is this correct?

I please tell me what hardware I need to buy to MOST EASILY accomplish this.

I have a functional router with my AX21, I would prefer to keep this.

I have both RE315 and RE715's available to me.

I have a cable already buried and going into my external building.

I would LOVE to run it on OneMesh, but that is not a deal-breaker.

So what do I need to add to my existing system to get WiFi through the cable into my exterior metal building?

@bluesman2a It's probably easier to start by getting the version #s off the units.  Then verify they have been updated to the latest firmware.

@jzchen I'm sorry but your response is completely unhelpful. In the interim I have had time to do MORE research. What I found (and I am happy to stand corrected if YOU tell me models that DO work) is that NO One Mesh device currently supports a wired backhaul. I see feature requests asking for this going back several years, and nothing noted in the plans to provide.

For those faced with a similar question: what I have found (again happy to stand corrected), is that both Deco products and Easy Mesh products from TP Link will support this. My solution here is that I am changing my router out for a TP-Link Deco XE75 AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Mesh System.

Hope this helps others, and for TP-LINK: You should be MORE CLEAR about this lack of capability on the One Mesh Products. The Easy Mesh products are very clear that they DO support this, and I would think it's a natural assumption that if you have a wifi extender with an ethernet port on it that it COULD serve as a wired access point.

@bluesman2a Please check the firmware download pages for your products.  If you see "EasyMesh" it is different, and some can do wired backhaul, but again it depends on the Hardware Version #s...

For example HW Version 3.6(US) firmware 1.2.1 clearly shows EasyMesh Ethernet Backhaul.

That is half.  If the RE715X firmware says the same thing, you are golden...

Sorry I've been very unhelpful...

Hello @bluesman2a ,

Welcome to our community.

Please refer to Q5 of Several questions about the OneMesh™ and Mesh: The OneMesh™ products can’t support the Ethernet backhaul.

Some of TP-Link EasyMesh Devices for Home already support Ethernet Backhaul. You can select 'Wired Backhaul' in the left menu to view supported models.
Currently, the Archer AX21_V3, RE315 support Ethernet Backhaul.

In addition, you can refer to EasyMesh Range Extenders Start Supporting Building a EasyMesh Network via Ethernet Backhaul,RE715X_V2 also supports Ethernet backhaul.

Overall, I think you can give priority to building an EasyMesh network.

Best Regards.

Re:AX-21 with OneMeshand wired range extender?
Thursday

  @Joseph-TP ,

Apologies for the slow response, but I wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU, SIR! That was an exemplarary response and gave me several jumping off points for further research.

In the interim, I opted to purchase a Deco Mesh system, which solved my immediate problem. In retrospect, it's a little too Apple-ish/Autopilot with no options for adjustment. It has just worked from the outset. Based on what I have learned from your resources and knowing my own proclivity to tinker, I think I will ultimately change over to an EasyMesh solution in the long run, that just gives me a few more options.

Feedback for TP-Link as a company: I'm a huge fan of your products, I've run your network gear for some years. I also have invested heavily in the Kasa devices, as they just work and are priced extremely competitively. The issue I have is that as a COMPANY you have too many ecosystems you are trying to keep up with i.e. One Mesh, Easy Mesh, Deco Mesh. On the home automation front Kasa, Tapo, other... Just give us ONE really good option that covers MOST use-cases.

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond so thoroughly sir!
