Hi, My personal modem/router died. spectrum put in separate modem and router. the modem has only one ssid instead of the ususal 2. but, per spectrum the modem it steers connection between the 2.4 and 5 bands depending on need and selects the best band for the need. When i attempt using and installing the extender via tether I can view a 2.4 and 5g band on the 5 wifi modem.

now, the separate router is wifi 6 (I had a spectrum wifi 5 but it was garbage). can this combo work with this extender do to their differences and should the tether ssid and password be the same as on the spectra modem during setup? 

Another concern, the router 6 wifi did not recognize my 2.4 g devices. spectrum web site has and app to steer the band to just 2.4 to get those 2.4 device to see then join my internet.

For your questions, here are some suggestions.


Regarding extender compatibility with band-steering routers:
Most TP-Link extenders should work with band-steering routers. During setup via Tether, if you can see both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands separately, you should be able to connect the extender to them.

Regarding SSID and password naming:
You have two options when setting up your extender:
• Same SSID/password as your main router: This creates seamless roaming • devices automatically switch between router and extender as you move around
• Different SSID/password: This gives you manual control over which network your devices connect to

For most users, using the same SSID and password is recommended for convenience and seamless coverage.

Regarding your 2.4GHz devices not being recognized:
When band steering is enabled with a single SSID, older 2.4GHz-only devices sometimes have trouble connecting. Based on our troubleshooting guidance:

  •  Temporarily disable Smart Connect/band steering on your Spectrum WiFi 6 router to create separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with different SSIDs
  •  Connect your 2.4GHz-only devices to the dedicated 2.4GHz network
  •  You can re-enable band steering later if needed, and most devices should maintain their connections
