Model: Deco BE25
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.17

Hi All,

We've have had a crap home network in our 3 floor town home for years. We recently upgraded and this is what I did (and this is my problem).

I have a cable modem (in the basement where the cable comes in) with an Ethernet out to a new Archer BE3500.

I have created a very stable wired network using my existing regular coaxial and using MoCA 2.5Ghz adapters.

I have the BE3500 with the WIFI turned off.

I have a set of 3 WIFI 7 Deco BE25's. Main Deco is connected directly to the BE3500 and the two satellite Deco's are via WIFI and they are setup ith Access Point Mode.

Lastly, two streaming boxes provided by the cable company that are Ethernet based.

I have the network setup and everything appears great. Everything works!

My problem lies with trying to setup the top floor Deco for Ehernet Backhaul. I thought it would be as simple as plugging in the Ehernet to the upstairs Deco and using a patch cable to the streaming box. Unfortunately, when I do that, the whole network goes to hell. No TV, Deco's show green but no internet.

I'm feeling like I'm missing something really basic or perhaps the Deco doesn't support this? Anyone have any ideas please? I can continue with the existing setup with little pain but I would really like to take advantage of the added benefit of the backhaul at the furthest point away from the main unit.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for reaching out! I understand that you have a Deco BE25 mesh system in Access Point mode, and while your Wi-Fi backhaul is working well, you're experiencing network failures when trying to set up Ethernet backhaul for your top-floor satellite Deco by connecting it to your streaming box.

About Ethernet Backhaul:
Ethernet Backhaul is a feature that allows different Deco units to transmit data via Ethernet (wire) instead of Wi-Fi (wireless), increasing throughput and optimizing network stability. Once Ethernet backhaul is established, Wi-Fi backhaul will be disconnected automatically, and the Deco app will display the backhaul status as "Ethernet."

The Issue with Your Current Setup:
The problem you're experiencing is likely due to improper network topology. Connecting your satellite Deco through the streaming box can create network loops or other connectivity issues. Improperly connected Ethernet cables can lead to severe network issues, such as network loops and broadcast storms.

Correct Ethernet Backhaul Setup:
For proper Ethernet backhaul, you need to connect your satellite Deco units directly back to the main Deco or through a network switch • not daisy-chained through other devices like streaming boxes. Here are the correct ways to use Ethernet Backhaul: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/98898

In your case with MoCA adapters, the satellite Deco should connect to a MoCA adapter that's part of your wired backbone, not to the streaming box's Ethernet port.

Additional Recommendations:
• Use CAT5E (or above) Ethernet cables between Deco units to achieve gigabit speeds
• If using network switches, ensure they support gigabit ports
• If you have loop detection enabled on any switches in your network, you may need to turn it off, as there will be a short loop (1-2 seconds) when a Deco unit switches from wireless to Ethernet backhaul

So my satellite deco is connected directly to the port and I was using the second port of the deco to connect to the streaming box. You apparently are saying that this will not work at all. The MoCA adapter needs to be solely for the use of the Deco and the second port is not for sharing other than to connect another Deco? If I understand that correctly, can I add a switch either before the Deco or to the second ethernet port on the Deco and accomplish wired backhaul and good Ethernet for the streambox? Thanks.

If you try a switch it has to be an unmannged one for the backhaul to work

@HelpFixDecoApp If that will make it work, should the placement of the unmanaged switch be, at the Moca connection or to the second cat 5 conection to the Deco? Where am I better putting it? Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply something was bugging me about the way you had this set up and needed to think on it a bit. Why are you using the Archer BE3500?

The BE25 has an advantage with two 2.5Gbps ports, supporting faster wired backhaul. It also features 240MHz channel width on the 5GHz band for better capacity, making it generally more future-proof for high-speed, multi-node setups.

I would try removing the Archer BE3500 and changing the "Operation Mode" from Access Point to Wi-Fi Router and see if it fixes your issue.

@HelpFixDecoApp Thanks but that is not helpful since I do need the Archer. Simple question was, where to place the switch with the current setup?

What is the model of the cable modem and service speed please?  Also it is unclear why you need the Archer, to supply VID service to the streaming boxes?

@HelpFixDecoApp  @Cymru1 So I took your advice. I removed the Archer and changed the network to router mode. I then connected the main deco directly to the cable modem. After that, I connected it using the second port directly to a TP-Link TL-SG105S-M2 | 5-Port Multi-Gigabit 2.5G Ethernet Unmanaged Switch. I set up all the other units including the wired backhaul furthest away from the base.

Everything I thought was good. I did a speedtest through the Deco App and I have pretty consistent speeds of 550/25 which I am happy with. Unfortunately, except for the main deco, I am only getting 15-20 down and 25 up. I thought it could be the nertwork upstream but when I plugged directly into the switch with a laptop, its the same throttled speed of 20/25. (It is the same wifi or wired)

Is there anything that you can think of that I may have missed, I did not have the problem with speed when the Archer was in the setup. Thanks.

@jzchen I removed the archer and now just using the Deco's

I had a speed issues once and I thought it was my deco routers turns it after some testing it was a bad cable/port in my wall. If possible I would remove the cable thats going from the modem to the main deco first.

Then run a cable from the modem to the back of your computer or another device that has an ethernet port and you can do a speed test on to see what the speed is

Then remove the cable and go from the back of the modem to the main deco then from a different port on the deco back to the device you did the speed test on to see the results.

If your still getting the limited speeds switch the cables on the deco around and do the speed test again.

If the speed issue is still there try a different cable.

Not sure it would be a setting since every other deco is getting the correct speeds.

Waiting for your reply
